DSW Returns: It’s Complicated! Here’s How to Get All of Your Money Back for Those Shoes You Don’t Want

Returning items purchased in store

You can return items purchased in a DSW store for a full refund to the original form of payment if you meet the following requirements.

Timing: Returns must be brought to the store within 60 days of the purchase date. After 60 days, you can still get a merchandise credit if the item is unworn and you have the receipt. DSW VIP Elite members get up to 365 days to return the item for a refund to the original form of payment.

Condition: The item must be unused and unworn, with its original packaging.

Documentation: Bring your original receipt with you. If you don’t have the receipt, you can still get a merchandise credit instead of a refunde.

Method: Items purchased in a DSW store must be returned to a DSW store. You cannot mail these items back.

DSW Online Returns

You can get a full refund to the original form of payment for items purchased at DSW.com by meeting the following requirements. Allow seven to 10 days for DSW to process your refund.

Timing: Send your online order back by mail within 60 days of the purchase date.

Shipping Fees: You can pay for the shipping yourself or you can use DSW’s Fedex label included in your online order. The cost of using the Fedex label is $8.50, and it’s deducted from your refund. DSW VIP Gold and DSW VIP Elite members do not get charged the return shipping fee. You can also avoid the $8.50 fee by making the original purchase with a DSW Rewards Visa® credit card.

Condition: The item needs to be unused and unworn, and sent back in its original packaging.

Documentation: Fill out the Return & Exchange form that’s on your original invoice. Include that along with your shipping invoice to get a refund to the original form of payment.

Exchanging items purchased in-store

If the item was purchased in a store, take it back to the store with the original receipt and packaging. Within 60 days of the purchase date, they’ll process your exchange as a refund and new purchase. After 60 days, you’ll get merchandise credit for any difference owed to you.

Exchanging items purchased at DSW.com

You can exchange items purchased at DSW.com for free. If you paid by PayPal, take the item into a store for your exchange. For any other form of payment, you can ship the item back to DSW. You’ll get a credit for the item you returned and a new charge for the replacement item. Use the return shipping label to specify the replacement item and it’ll be sent out to you for free. Any price difference in your favor will be refunded to your original form of payment, if the exchange is made within 60 days of the original purchase. After 60 days, you’ll get a DSW eGift card in that amount.

If the item was purchased in a store, you can’t send it back by mail — you have to return it to a DSW store. Take the unused and unworn item to a store, along with its original packaging. You’ll be issued a merchandise credit.

You are responsible for the return shipping cost, unless you have the original paperwork that came with the order and you specify that you are exchanging the item. If the replacement item costs less than your return, you’ll get an eGift card for the difference.

Can I return worn shoes to DSW?

Nope, DSW doesn’t accept used or worn shoes as returns. If you’re not sure about keeping the item, save the original packaging and don’t wear it outside.

Can I return DSW online purchases to a DSW store?

You can return purchases made online at DSW.com to a DSW store. But you can’t return in-store purchases by mail.

What is DSW’s return policy when you don’t have a receipt?

You can still return the item without the original receipt or shipping invoice, but you’ll be refunded with merchandise credit. DSW may ask you for photo ID and may also limit how many items you can return without documentation.  

How does DSW handle PayPal returns?

Bring the unworn item with your original receipt within 60 days of purchase to a store, and DSW will refund the purchase price to your PayPal account. If you used a combination of PayPal and a gift card to make the purchase, you’ll get refunded with a gift card.

Can you return items purchased from DSW.com for free?

Generally, you have to pay for the shipping to return an item purchased online from DSW. All online orders ship with a prepaid Fedex label in the box. If you use that label, you’ll be charged $8.50. There are two ways to avoid the return shipping fee:

  1. Become a DSW VIP Gold or DSW VIP Elite member.
  2. Pay for your purchase with a DSW Rewards Visa® credit card.

Can I return sale items to DSW?

If an item is marked Final Sale, it’s not eligible for return or exchange.

Can I return perfume to DSW?

Fragrances are considered “specialty items” and can only be returned if they are unopened. Any seal on the product has to be intact. Other specialty items include nail polish, skincare products, dry shampoos, anything containing alcohol, rechargeable batteries, and USB rechargeable devices.
