Love it or hate it, New Year’s is a comin’. Most of us have high hopes for the NYE and tend to give this night more credit than it deserves. But the only thing more overrated than the continuous hype of NYE is the stereotypical sparkle that comes along with it. For years “NYE outfits” have translated to allover sequin silhouettes. And yeah, there’s a fun factor there, but after the second or third, they all start to look the same. Sure, you could change it up with a varying length or sleeve. But at the end of the day, it’s too easy to get lost in a sea of gold sequins when everyone’s wearing them.
So this year, we’re laying down this challenge: shine on NYE without the sequins! There are so many creative ways to bring light and glam into your look, why settle for old hat? Make a lasting impression in your party dress (oh, and on social media after the fact) by trying out one of these shimmering new suggestions.
Shimmering, Sequin-free NYE Outfits
1. The High-Sheen Tuxedo Pant
Take a page from the boys and boast a tux or tuxedo pant instead of your standard mini dress. It’ll turn heads and make hitting the dance floor so much more comfortable. Choose a luxurious fabric like a satin or velvet to up the wow factor, and it’ll lend a feminine feel to this more masculine shape.
2. Full Metal Dress
It’s not that we’re anti-metallic — NYE has always been about the gold and silver — but donning the metal tones is so much more fun when it’s in an unexpected manner. If you love the gold sequin look, try replacing it this year with something in a slicker, liquid gold silhouette. This piece from NastyGal is still insanely opulent, but far less gaudy. And, it doesn’t read like you’re trying too hard. Who wouldn’t want to be dripping in curve-hugging karats for the last big party of the year?
3. LBD + Glam Bag
Who needs sequins when you’ve got chains, stones and beautiful beading? An embellished bag can make just as much of a statement as allover sequins, without you having to stand in for the disco ball. Save some coin by bringing an old little black dress out of retirement and jazzing it up with some pint-sized punch. You’ll still have sparkle in hand, but you won’t be blinding anybody with every shimmy and sashay.
