A protégé of Comme des Garçons owner and designer Rei Kawakubo, Japanese fashion designer Junya Watanabe started his own line called Junya Watanabe Comme Des Garçons under the Comme Des Garçons Company in 1992. Using technologically innovative materials with traditional styling, Watanabe is part of the new modernist group in fashion. Described as a techno couture designer, Watanabe’s unique pieces are known for their distinct shapes and structures. The designer has collaborations with Converse, Nike, Levis and Fred Perry. Recently, first lady Michelle Obama was seen wearing a Watanabe designed cardigan on her trip to London.
