6 Trends from NYFW That Anyone Can Pull Off

It’s hard to imagine a world in which we don’t take at least some inspiration from the wild, raucous and incredible looks that grace the runways at NYFW each year.

For fall/winter 2019, imagination was seemingly the focus of every designer’s MO — and it made for some incredible viewing both in the audience and at home. Let’s take that imagination and turn it into wearable style strategies, shall we? Here are six NYFW trends we’re planning on wearing.

1. Statement Earrings

If the Ulla Johnson, Badgley Mischka, and ADEAM runways were any indication, it’s statement earrings for everyone this year. The proof was in the drama — heavy gilded pieces that seemed astonishing at a glance; chunky hoops that channeled a bit of vintage flair; and shoulder-grazing danglers that stole the spotlight.

It’s safe to make these max-impact baubles a part of your wardrobe now and put them into heavier rotation once it cools down outside. Bring the drama in a pair of Stella + Ruby Petal Chiffon Statement Earrings ($48).

2. Dainty Heels

Sure, there were healthy doses of chunky sneakers and strappy pumps that already exist in most closets. But the addition of a dainty heel was a welcome change that added a little sweetness to the stages at Brock Collection, Self Portrait, and Tadashi Shoji.

These shoe looks were all infused with a glamorous spirit that felt retro at a glance — making them an easy, but impactful style statement to work into your wardrobe. For starters, try your new dainty heels with tea-length dresses or flowing pants.

A pair we love? Who What Wear Alana Toe Cap Kitten Heeled Pumps ($34.99).

3. Sleek Belts

We’ll never say no to a belt that creates definition and lends polish to an otherwise laid-back piece. That was the key on runways ranging from Taoray Wang to Tibi — sharp belts that added crisp luxury to everything from sleek skirts to pantsuits.

You can use yours to cinch a baggy blouse or give a T-shirt dress a new shape. Try Banana Republic Studded Trouser Belt ($54).

4. Purple Everything

It was a purple revolution everywhere you turned. And the beauty of it is there’s no commitment to one single version of the shade. Whether you’re a lilac lover or passionate about eggplant, there’s a hue for you in the vibrant mix. So long as it’s purple, it’s just right for fall and winter.

Try something unexpected, like the Lush Drapey Open Trench Coat ($29.97), to add some warmth to your chilly days.

5. Sultry Satin

It’s tough to resist satin under the best of circumstances, so when it suddenly appears on the runway in such force you have to consider it a fashionable commandment of sorts. From the sleek sheaths at Brandon Maxwell to the devastatingly chic trousers produced by Tom Ford, satin turned up in dozens of iterations all week long.

Go for all out glamour in ASOS DESIGN Midi Dress ($72).

6. Off-the-Shoulder

Cold shoulders had their moment. Now it’s time for off-shoulder looks to take their place — and that’s just fine with us. These silhouettes carry a certain modern sophistication that is both elegant and timeless.

The key is to select one that features a single off-shoulder — it’s nonchalantly chic, as on this 1. State Ruffle Top ($33.18).
