The family owned company, J Mendel, was established in 1800 by Joseph Breitman in Paris as manufacturer of exceptional furs favoured by Russian aristocrats. The company is now a full luxury brand that offers ready-to-wear clothes for women under the helm of head designer and fifth generation heir Gilles Mendel. After relocating the brand from Paris to New York, Gilles Mendel focused on showing the versatility of fur to the world by using it to add texture to his designs. Aside from fur, Gilles has also incorporated other fabrics into the line such as silk chiffons and woollen tweeds, to which he uses to create classic and elegant looking dresses and gowns that has the look of the old world meets.
