How to: Wax Your Own Legs: Beauty Newsletter

June 6, 2006 05:23 AM

It's summer and that means it's time to defuzz. Heading to local salon to get a wax can be quite pricey, so we put together some tips to help you wax your own legs in the comfort of your own home.

Step 1: Pick your product. Two great options are Aussie Nad's, ($18.99 at www.drugstore.com), and Sally Hansen Spa Wax Hair Removal Kit ($9.99 at www.walgreens.com). Nad's is an all-natural gel, while Sally Hansen contains a soothing blend of lavender and vitamins. Both products come with applicators and enough hair removal strips for several waxings. No worries about sensitive skin - both are dermatologist tested (and smell yummy, too).

Step 2: Clean up. Shower to strip your skin of oils, then dry off for an hour. Hair must be 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch long for waxing, so for best results be sure you have the right amount of growth.

Step 3: Ready, set, wax!If using the Sally Hansen, nuke it for 30 seconds in the microwave-no need to heat the Nad's. Apply a thin coat of wax on a four- to five-inch section of your leg in the same direction of your hair growth, then smooth a removal strip over the area. Stroke the strip twice (it helps bind the wax to your hair), and rip it off as quickly as possible. It'll hurt, but a slow rip means hair won't come off, and this is not a process you'll want to repeat too many times!

Step 4: Relax. Apply pressure to the area you waxed, and realize that post-waxing redness will linger for several hours. If using Nad's, rinse the waxed area with cool water. If using the Sally Hansen, wipe the skin with the Azulene Finishing Oil, included in the kit. Now take a deep breath; you've just given yourself a spa-quality treatment for a fraction of the price!
