TJ maxx return policy: What to know

The Budget Fashionista provides this review of the TJ Maxx return policy for informational purposes only. These policies are subject to change.

Let’s face it: returns are nobody’s favorite part of shopping, but T.J.Maxx keeps things pretty fair if you know how their system works. Here’s the lowdown, in a friendly, no-drama way.

In-store purchases

If you bought your item at a T.J.Maxx store, you have 30 days from the date of purchase to make a return with your original register receipt. Refunds are issued to the same form of payment used at checkout. If you paid by check, you’ll need to wait 10 days before receiving a cash refund.

Returns made after 30 days, or those made with a gift receipt or no receipt, will be refunded as merchandise credit. To process a return without a receipt, you must present a valid government-issued photo ID with your name, address, and signature. The name on your ID must match the name on the merchandise credit in order to use it.

Items must be unused, unwashed, and in sellable condition with all tags still attached. Swimwear and intimate apparel require tickets to be properly attached. Some products, including items over $1,000, handbags or footwear over $499.99, long occasion gowns, luggage sets, and opened beauty products, cannot be returned in store.

Items purchased at T.J.Maxx stores can only be returned to T.J.Maxx locations, not to Marshalls, HomeGoods, or any other TJX brand.

    Online purchases

If you ordered from tjmaxx.com, you have 40 days from your order date to return items either in-store or by mail.

    • In-store returns are free. Bring your item, shipping confirmation email, and original packaging.

    • Mail returns cost $11.99 per package, deducted from your refund or merchandise credit.

    • Returns received after 40 days or without documentation are refunded as merchandise credit.

    • Items bought with a gift card always receive merchandise credit.

    • PayPal purchases returned in-store are refunded as merchandise credit, while mailed returns are refunded to PayPal minus the $11.99 fee.

Refunds for mail returns typically post within 10 to 14 business days after T.J.Maxx receives your item. Refunds for in-store returns are processed immediately but may take a few days to appear in your account. Exchanges aren’t available for online orders.

    Oversized items and restrictions

Oversized items may have additional shipping surcharges that are nonrefundable. To return an oversized item by mail, contact T.J.Maxx customer service. Used or unsellable items aren’t accepted.

    Holiday return window

For the holiday season, purchases made between October 5, 2025 and December 24, 2025 can be returned through February 4, 2026. Gift returns with a receipt will receive a store credit instead of a cash refund.

    Important reminders

    • All returns are processed through T.J.Maxx’s verification system, which tracks return patterns and can decline refunds if misuse is suspected.
    • Gift cards can’t be returned for cash or credit
    • You may be asked to sign for any return, even if you have a receipt.

Following these steps helps your T.J.Maxx return go through smoothly and without delays. Once you know how the policy works, you can shop with confidence and enjoy every deal, start to finish.
