The At-Home Life: Subscription Style Boxes Are Where It’s At

Subscription style boxes have always appealed to us. We love the idea of someone doing the hard work while we sit at home like the rich and famous, having a fashion show in our living room with whatever our online stylists send our way. In the middle of a pandemic, heading out to a store to try on and shop for clothes seems almost as fun as going to the dentist (and we really hate going to the dentist).

We’ve put together a list of eight subscription style boxes that cover your bases, whether you’re plus size, care about sustainability, looking for something to wear while getting fit, or even shopping for the whole family.

4 Subscription Style Boxes

1. The OG: Stitch Fix

Stitch Fix is probably one of the most well-known subscription style boxes, and for good reason. It was one of the first in the game, and the service caters to everyone. Stitch Fix offers boxes for women, men, and kids — you can shop for your whole family without ever leaving your couch. With plus-size and even maternity options, Stitch Fix is a good option when you need something particular or nothing particular at all.

Instead of a regular monthly fee, Stitch Fix charges a $20 styling fee per box, which can be used as a credit towards anything you choose to keep. Every box includes five items hand-selected by your personal stylist. Keep what you love and send back the rest for free! You can have a box sent to you as often as you like. Take advantage of the option to provide detailed feedback to your stylist, so your boxes get better and better.

2. For the curvy: Dia & Co

For plus-size fashionistas, we love Dia & Co. You complete a detailed style and body quiz and stylists use your answers to send you flattering pieces that fit your bod and your personality. Sizes range from 14 to 32. The $20 monthly styling fee can be applied as a credit to any items you choose to buy.

Each box includes five items picked for you, and you have the option to choose either an everyday fashion box or activewear! If you choose to keep every item in your box, you’ll receive 25% off everything.

3. For fitness: Fabletics

If you live to work out (or dress like you do), Fabletics is right up your alley. With options for women and men as well as plus sizes, it’s easy for everyone to get in shape while looking fashionable. For $49.95 a month, you’ll receive an outfit containing two to three coordinating pieces that are cute enough to wear out for a run around the neighborhood or to snap some selfies for the ‘gram.

VIP members can shop individual pieces for 50% off, making it tempting to stock up on comfy and cute leggings. You can skip a box whenever you want, as long as you choose to do so before the fifth of the month – otherwise you’ll still be charged. See our full Fabletics review.

4. For the earth: Frank and Oak

For eco-conscious fashionistas, Frank and Oak is the subscription style box for you. From the fabrics to factories, the Frank and Oak team makes choices specifically to reduce environmental impact, including the human costs. The $25 monthly styling fee will get you three to five eco-friendly fashion picks in each box. Like most boxes, you only pay for the items you keep and can return the rest. But if you send all items back, you’ll still be out the $25 styling free.

Frank and Oak offers options for both women and men. The size range of XXS to XL and 00 to 14 for women is limiting, unfortunately. Before your box ships, you can preview what’s included and rate each item — which helps build the excitement for the new pieces coming your way.

4 Clothing Rental Boxes

Clothing rental services work differently, in that you’re not just trying the pieces on at home; you can actually wear them as much as you like. When you’re done, just send all the garments back at once — no laundering required — and a new box gets shipped out. And if you really fall in love with something, you can buy it at a steep discount.

1. Gwynnie Bee

Gwynnie Bee started as a plus-size subscription box, but has since expanded its range to include sizes from 0 to 32. Unlike most companies on our list, instead of paying a fee per box, you pay monthly based on how many items you want in each box. Prices start at $49 per month for a single item per box, but you can request as many items as you want every month. Shipping is free both ways, and you don’t even have to fuss with dry cleaning! Just send the item back when you’re done with it. Styles offered by Gwynnie Bee range from casual tees to work-appropriate looks that will have you looking like the boardroom boss babe you are.

2. Haverdash

This cute suede dress is part of the Haverdash collection.

Haverdash is our pick for rental services, because you get three pieces at a time for $59. See our Haverdash unboxing and also how Haverdash measures up to Le Tote.

3. Le Tote

Le Tote does a fabulous job of matching you with garments that fit well — thanks to the sizing survey you complete before any totes are shipped. Like Haverdash, Le Tote pricing starts at $59 and you can choose a classic or maternity plan. See our Le Tote review.

4. Infinitely Loft

Infinitely Loft may be the most versatile of rental services, in that sizes range include XXS to Plus 26, along with range for petite, plus, and maternity. And the value is excellent — for $64.95, you get up to three boxes monthly and each box has three garments. The catch? You have to love Loft.
