The Budget Fashionista provides this review of the Old Navy return policy for informational purposes only. These policies are subject to change.
Old Navy is a great option for cheap casual wear, but inconsistent sizing and quality can mean a greater likelihood of making returns. Here’s what you need to know about returning items purchased at Old Navy.
How long you have to return or exchange
You have 30 days to return or exchange your item:
- For online purchases, the 30-day period starts when your order is delivered.
- For in-store purchases, it starts on the day you bought the item.
If you make a return after 30 days, you may still be eligible for a merchandise credit instead of a refund to your original payment method.

Holiday returns
During the holiday season, you get a little extra time. Items purchased between Oct. 15 and Dec. 24 can be returned through Jan. 15 of the next year, or within 30 days of delivery or purchase, whichever gives you more time. You will need some documentation of your purchase.
What can be returned
Old Navy accepts most items as long as they’re in their original condition meaning unwashed, unworn, and with tags attached. Defective or damaged items can be returned at any time, and you can bring them to an Old Navy or Old Navy Outlet store for help.
What can’t be returned
A few things can’t be returned or exchanged:
- Items marked “Final Sale”
- Masks
- Swimwear without the original tags or hygienic liner
- Sunglasses without original tags (unless defective)
- Items labeled “Mail Only” online
Old Navy kids’ guarantee
Old Navy stands behind the quality of its kids’ clothes and shoes. If any Girls or Boys items develop a defect like holes, broken zippers, or tears, within one year of purchase, you can get a refund for the price paid.
- Refunds require your receipt or shipping confirmation email.
- Returns without a receipt follow Old Navy’s standard policy.
- This guarantee doesn’t apply to accessories or damage caused by wear, accidents, or stains.
How to return or exchange
- In stores. Bring your item and receipt to any Old Navy or Old Navy Outlet store. It’s the fastest way to get your refund or exchange.
- By mail. Online returns are free. You can start your return online, print a prepaid shipping label, or use a QR code at a drop-off point for an easy return. Exchanges are also free and handled through the same process.
Keep in mind that store purchases can’t be mailed back, and online items marked “Mail Only” can’t be returned in-store.
Gift returns
Gifts can be returned, too.
- With a gift receipt or invoice, you’ll get a gift card for the purchase price.
- Without a receipt or invoice, you’ll receive a merchandise certificate for the item’s current selling price.
Refunds and payment methods
Refunds are usually made to your original form of payment:
- Credit card refunds go back to the same card.
- Gift card refunds go to the same card or a new one.
- PayPal and Apple Pay refunds return to your account.
- Afterpay refunds go back through Afterpay once your return is processed.
- Rewards used on a purchase are credited back to your account as points.
Refunds include taxes originally paid. If your refund goes back to a credit card, your bank may take up to 10 business days to post it.
TikTok shop returns
If you bought something from Old Navy through TikTok Shop, returns must be made in the TikTok app. Go to your orders, select the item, and follow the return steps. Exchanges aren’t supported there, so you’ll need to place a new order for the replacement item.
Does Old Navy have a good return policy?
The Budget Fashionista rates the Old Navy return policy as average-plus, with a score of 3.7 points out of 5. Mailed returns are free, but the policy terms are cumbersome to read and navigate online.

Each category is rated on a 1 to 5 scale based on how generous, convenient, and easy to understand the policy is. The final score is an average of all categories.
