Want to wake up to healthy, glowing skin every day? I mean, who doesn’t? Figuring out how to get better skin may not your top priority in life right now, but maybe it falls into the “nice to have” category. And you are reminded of it too often by women who seem to glow effortlessly, while you are masking and rolling and applying serums. Oh, and not seeing the results you want. Because you know, life’s not fair and other clichés.

But since everything happens for a reason — oops! there I go again — we must learn to work with what nature bestowed upon us. Besides, there’s no such thing as perfect skin. We all have imperfections that we should learn to embrace. We’re just humans after all and we must look on the bright side of life. That’s the last of the trite sayings, I promise!

Now, about improving the health and appearance of your skin. I’m all for accepting and loving ourselves just the way we are, but you can have self-love and still seek improvement. That applies to skincare as well. The important thing is to maintain realistic expectations and understand that proper skincare is more than slathering a bunch of products on your face and expecting miracles. It’s more of a journey and there are several little steps you can take that will guide you in the right direction.

Whether you’re a skincare newbie or a skincare junkie seeking some new tricks to improve your skincare game, these simple tips should help.

Here’s how to get better skin

1. Food for thought and skin

You won’t hear any product ads talking about it, but skin health begins with what you put on your plate. Before rushing to the drugstore to buy the latest beauty products that promise to give you flawless skin and fix every problem you’ve ever had in your life, take a look at your diet. (On that note, if something seems too good to be true, it definitely is.) Perhaps it’s time to cut down on refined sugars and junk food, and replace them with fruits, veggies, and whole foods.

2. Customize your skincare

There’s no one size fits all in skincare. That’s why so many products that others rave about do nothing for you or even give you breakouts. Everyone’s skin is different, and you need beauty products that are tailored to your specific needs. That’s exactly why customized aka bespoke beauty products have become a thing over the past few years as more brands offer customized skincare solutions for their customers. Beauty brands in this space include Curology, Kiehl’s Apothecary Preparations, Atolla, and Vitruvi Dynamic Skincare.

3. Use a booster

You can also personalize skincare products yourself. For example, you can use CBD isolate to add extra oomph to your creams or oils and make them even more potent. Or, use essential oils to address the conditions that are most bothersome to you. For example, orange oil and sandalwood oil are both great for calming inflamed blemishes. Just do your research before mixing and matching ingredients and always, always do a patch test.

4. Sunscreen all the way

I know, you’re tired of literally every skincare article on the planet telling you to wear sunscreen. But there’s a reason this advice is so common. You may love sunshine but, sadly, it’s a one-sided romance. The sun has little love for your skin. Its damaging effects on the skin have been long discussed and well-documented by many scientific studies. Just wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine. If there were a single best answer for how to get better skin, it would be to wear sunscreen daily.

Of course, finding the right sunscreen for your skin (with an SPF of at least 30) isn’t so black-and-white. You may have to go through a trial-and-error process, but it will pay off with skin that’s healthier and more beautiful over time.

5. Go makeup free

Wearing makeup is lovely. It can help boost your self-esteem and give you the extra confidence you need to take on the world. Plus, it’s so fun to apply makeup and try different looks. But going makeup free also has its perks.

When you put makeup on your face just because you feel pressured by society’s standard to look perfect and fit in, it can feel more like a burden and less like a tool of empowerment. Why not give yourself and your skin a break occasionally and go makeup free? It can work wonders for your skin’s health and for your mental health as well.

6. Beauty sleep is no myth

Pulling too many all-nighters can wreak havoc on your skin. Beauty sleep is not a myth. I’m not basing this on Sleeping Beauty’s story, but on scientific facts. Studies show that sleep is critical for plump and youthful skin.

Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep per night as doctors recommend. And while I’m on this topic, don’t ever go to bed with your makeup on. It’s a capital crime in the beauty world and the skincare gods won’t let that slide.

7. Adjust and adapt

If you’re looking for the be-all, end-all skincare routine, you’ve got it wrong. Even the best skincare regimens falter over time. What worked for you in the past might not suit your complexion right now. Maybe you used to have very oily skin but as you age your skin becomes drier and you have to use more moisturizing products. Or maybe you had acne, but your skin is clear now, so you might want to cut down on acne treatments. Your skin’s needs change with time and you must adapt your skincare regimen accordingly.

Remember, improving your skin is a journey that never really ends. So rather than worrying about how to get better skin, think about ways you can take care of your skin now, and on into the future.
