Buying clothes online can be tricky, and sometimes what arrives isn’t exactly what you expected. Maybe the fit is off or the color looks different in person. ModCloth makes it easy to send things back or exchange them, as long as you follow a few simple steps.
When you can make a return
You have 30 days from the date your order was delivered to start a return or exchange. Items must be new, unworn, unwashed, and have the original tags and packaging. That includes the clear plastic bag with the product barcode.
If your return is approved, you can choose one of these options:
- A refund to your original payment method
- A ModCloth store credit, which arrives faster
- An exchange for a different size in the same style and color
ModCloth processes refunds within two business days after your return reaches the U.S. warehouse. Store credits and exchanges are processed even faster once the package is scanned by the carrier.
Some brands sold on ModCloth, such as Chelsea Crew, Orchid Bloom, and Princess Highway, can only be refunded and are not eligible for store credit or exchanges.
What items are accepted
Most unused items can be returned, but there are a few special rules:
- Shoes must be in new condition and sent back in the original shoe box, packed inside another box for shipping.
- Swimwear must still have its hygienic liner attached and intact.
- Final sale items cannot be refunded or exchanged but may be turned into store credit through ModCloth’s ModCloset program.
- Gift cards are final sale and can’t be returned or transferred to another customer’s account.
If you send back an item after the 30-day window or without prior approval, it will be treated as forfeited and handled at ModCloth’s discretion.
Return processing fees
There is a $12 processing fee per order if you did not purchase Checkout+ when placing your order. This fee is taken out of your refund or store credit.
If you did buy Checkout+, your return or exchange is completely free.
Shipping and handling fees from your original order are not refundable.
How to start a return
ModCloth uses a return portal called Loop to make things easier. Here’s how it works:
- Visit the Loop portal to open your return or exchange request.
- Loop will create a return label and a packing slip for you.
- Put the packing slip inside your package and attach the prepaid return label to the outside.
- Drop it off at your nearest carrier location that has a daily pickup.
ModCloth recommends avoiding drop boxes without daily service since that can delay your refund.
If your order included items from ModCloth’s partner brands, you’ll need to open a separate return for each one. There’s no extra charge for this, but you must send each item to the correct warehouse using the label provided.
International returns
If you’re returning from outside the U.S. (including Australia, Canada, or the U.K.), you can still start your return through the same Loop portal within 30 days of delivery. The same item rules apply: everything must be unworn, unwashed, and in its original packaging.
International customers will see the return shipping fee before finalizing the return. Refunds go back to your original payment method within two business days of reaching ModCloth’s U.S. warehouse, or you can choose store credit instead.
For returns from other countries, you’ll need to use your own shipping carrier. After opening the return request, ModCloth will provide return instructions and a packing slip. You must email your tracking number and order number to support@modcloth.com within five business days to keep your return active.
Returning items to ModCloth isn’t complicated once you know the steps. The brand’s online system does most of the work for you, and the refund options give you some flexibility. If you stay within the 30-day window and keep your items in new condition, the rest is straightforward.
