The Budget Fashionista provides this review of the JCPenney return policy for informational purposes only. These policies are subject to change.
Shopping at JCPenney can be a fun search for deals, but sometimes a purchase doesn’t end up being the right fit. Whether you bought it in-store or online, the return process is simple and gives you plenty of time to make changes. Here’s what you need to know.

When you can return
Most JCPenney items can be returned or exchanged within 60 days of your purchase date.
- You’ll need a receipt, gift receipt, or order confirmation for a full refund to your original form of payment.
- If you don’t have a receipt, you may still be eligible for a Merchandise Return Voucher for the item’s lowest selling price from the past 45 days, as long as you bring a valid photo ID.
- Refunds without a receipt are given as a store voucher, not back to your card or cash.
There are some exceptions to the 60-day rule, though. Jewelry boxes and armoires must be returned within 30 days, while fitness trackers and smart watches must be returned within 10 days.
Holiday returns
For the holiday season, purchases made on or after Oct. 1 are eligible for return or exchange through Jan. 31 of the following year.
- Returns with a receipt will be refunded to your original payment or a JCPenney Gift Card.
- Returns without a receipt may qualify for a Merchandise Return Voucher based on the lowest price in the last 45 days.
How to make a return
You can return items in two ways:
- In-store. Bring your item and receipt to any JCPenney store. This is always free.
- By mail. Start a return online through your JCPenney account or order lookup page. Use the prepaid UPS label provided and mail the item back. There is a flat $8 UPS return fee, deducted from your refund when you use the JCPenney prepaid label.
Online returns usually take up to four weeks to process because of shipping and handling time.
Refund timing
Refunds go back to your original payment method whenever possible.
- JCPenney Credit Card refunds typically appear within 3 to 4 business days after the item is received.
- Bank or debit card refunds usually post in 7 to 10 business days.
- Purchases made with Buy Now, Pay Later programs are credited back to your loan or handled by Synchrony.
If you used PayPal, your refund may go back to your PayPal account or be issued by check in some cases.
What can’t be returned
Some items are nonreturnable, including:
- Gift cards and donations
- Personalized or monogrammed items
- Altered merchandise
- Body jewelry, face masks, false eyelashes, and ear piercing kits
- Perishable foods and services
- Shipping or delivery fees
Items must be in new condition, and tags should still be attached. Special occasion dresses and men’s tuxedos must have their original tags in place to qualify for a return.
Price match and adjustments
If you find a lower advertised price on the same item at a competitor within 14 days of your purchase, JCPenney will match the price and refund you the difference. Bring proof of the ad to any store or contact Customer Care for online purchases.
JCPenney’s return policy is designed to keep things easy and flexible. You have 60 days to decide, free in-store returns, and simple online options if you’d rather mail it back. Just keep your receipt handy, and the rest is a breeze.
