What: Blame it on Amy Winehouse and Hairspray’s Tracy Turnblatt. The beehive hairdo is a buzzin’, once again.
What the experts say: In a recent issue of Star magazine, this blast from the past is reported to be popping up all over red carpets, but with a new twist: “The modern way to wear the hive, is to sweep bangs (or face-framing layers) off to the side of the face. Pulling all the hair into the hive or wearing fringe across the forehead is so passé.
What we say: Lucky for us, the version of this stiff, ratted pouf, requires less Aqua Net as well as less teasing. However, a bit of backcombing is still needed to obtain that “bump on the back of your head. While this style can work with any hair texture, a little more product (try a texture spray like got2b Styl-tini Strong One for $5.99) is necessary for thin strands.
1. To achieve your modern hive, divide hair into 3-inch-wide sections.
2. With your first section, start teasing with a rattail comb up to 2 inches away from the root and lightly spray each section.
3. After you’ve ratted all of your sections, lightly brush down your hair to create balance and shape.
4. The back of your hair could then be put in a messy ponytail or loose French twist for a more casual daytime look.

Oh lord! I have memories of Ray-ette hair spray in a can, teasing combs and Bobbie Gentry.
