New York Fashion Week 2019 was a celebration of the unexpected — and that’s saying a lot for an industry that lives on shock-and-awe. The spring/summer 2020 events took us all in different directions, and many shows felt worlds apart from runways past for their brilliant performances and innovative settings. (We’re looking at you, Tom Ford, for hosting an A-list crowd in an old subway station.)

But now the magic is winding down and we’re all left with the same question: what’ll we be wearing next spring? Here’s your answer.

New York Fashion Week 2019: 5 Trends

1. Polka dot power

Yep, spring is a great time to break out your power florals — but NYFW 2019 showed us that it’s perfectly fine to double down on polka dots, too. The vibrant pattern, so reminiscent of childhood, takes a grown-up turn in time for the season. There were flowing pants at Marc Jacobs and sleek gowns at Carolina Herrera. What’s not to love about something that’s so fun and uplifting? Bring it on, spring!

Try a dotted top tucked into your fav jeans for an easy, stylish outfit. Or, a full polka-dot skirt paired with a simple t-shirt works perfectly when you’re feeling quirky and retro.

2. Bright white suits

Remember when the power suit had those crazy shoulder pads? Well, thankfully, those days are long gone. The 2020 suit is all about sleek, show-stopping style — and in crisp, bright white of course. There was the menswear-inspired look with black lapels that took over the Tory Burch runway, and the sexy tied-up topper at Mara Hoffman. Who can resist?

3. Lime fresh fun

Are you sensing a trend here? Having fun with spring fashion is something we can all get behind — and a little dose of lime will definitely do the trick. There was the glossy lime blazer at Staud, the eye-popping slip dress from S by Serena Williams, and the dreamy-meets-sexy gown at Jonathan Simkhai.

If you’re thinking lime is not for you, think again: even a pop beneath your blazer is enough to change the tide of your ensemble.

4. Fresh bold flowers

Okay, we can’t get through a fall NYFW without a nod to fresh spring florals. If you happen to love a good botanical print, you’ll obsess over the bold finds that popped up all over Kate Spade and Prabal Garung. From vibrant bags to eye-popping dresses, floral will once again make its claim on spring style. What can we say? Warm weather was made for flower power.

5. The chain accent

Fashion is a world of contrast to be sure. Next to the cheery whites and limes and florals, the humble chain accent has a place in your closet this spring, too. We saw it on sandals and heels galore, and the chain added just the right dose of sex appeal to otherwise sweet, light looks.

Zimmerman, for example, hit it out of the park with a thick, gilded chain wrapped around a sleek black heel. And Helmut Lang added a slinky chain to a simple strappy heel, transforming a basic into something unexpectedly chic and, dare we say, futuristic.

If a chain embellishment feels too punk-rock, you can always nod to the trend with a chain print piece.
