8 Sundresses for Every Girl

Sundresses for summer? How inventive, right? But let’s take a minute to put aside the preconceived notions and focus what really makes these single silhouettes great. Sure, they’re feminine and flirty. And they’re also just easy.

The sundress is one of few pieces where “throw-and-go” results in a look that works and can even be show-stopping. And it’s not just about the old floral frocks for the weekend picnic. (You remember those — the fitted sleeveless number your Mom bought to match your little sister or maybe your cousin. Good times).

If you’re down with a little dress action, but hoping for something a bit more tailored to your personal style, read on to discover a warm-weather design for every style. There’s a whole new summer sundress world out there, ready to make your season, weekend after weekend, BBQ after BBQ.

Sundresses for the bohemian

Modern boho babes, you can share your free-spirited vibe with the world in an A-line shape with an airy silhouette and girly details. Embroidery, a bit of fringe, or a tassel are all in your wheelhouse.

Anthropologie’s Kallie Flowy Tunic dress has that breezy look combined with tiers and texture. Yes, the neckline is J Lo inspired, but that falls right in line with the Boho style. If that’s too much boob for you, sneak in a bralette, sports bra, or cami underneath.

For a shapelier boho statement, try a curve-hugging knit dress with fringe. You’ll fit right into any festival, especially if you pair this dress with organic-inspired accessories — basket bags, feather earrings, or a wooden cuff bracelet.

Sundresses for the retro girl

Retro prints and silhouettes of years past fit the vintage enthusiast’s sunny summer pursuits. Checks, stripes, and polka dots channel the old-school grace of ’50s and ’60s — without the boredom or stiff personality to match. Button-up fronts and tie waist details seal the deal for the gal looking for a chic dose of nostalgia.

Vertical stripes in old-school hues plus a dainty belt at the waist make for a charming combo. This lightweight slip dress also has an inviting hemline and a flattering, floaty shape. You’re sure to stand out in this pretty piece all season long.

The only trouble is, the dress is so distinctive, everyone will remember it. To get more use out of it, pair this dress with different accessories at each wear.

Patterned dress from Chico's Off The Rack.
Spectrum Advance knee-length patterned dress. See details at Chico’s Off The Rack.

Work the color of the year — magenta — into your wardrobe this season with a dress that’s bold in pattern, but conservative in shape. The boat neckline and knee-length hem keep your parts covered, which makes this dress super versatile.

Dress it up with a pearl earring and heels for your cocktail party invites. Or, slip into flats and head outside for sightseeing.

Sundresses for the girl next door

If classic is where your tastes lie, then look for a traditional sweetheart neckline. Made for backyard bashes, garden parties, relaxed weddings and more, a flirty little floral or polka dot number suits all of summer’s easygoing occasions. Choose a dark palette for more drama or citrus or green hues for daytime fun.

There are several features to love about this budget-friendly dress from Forever 21. Sweetheart neckline, self-tie straps for a perfect fit, a high slit to show off those legs, and a hidden zipper at the back. This dress can take you out at night or turn heads in daylight hours.

Pair polka dots with a pretty neckline and curvy silhouette and you get a fun balance of sweet and saucy. Thanks to side pockets and a lightweight construction, this dress is a practical choice for anything from picnics to casual daytime weddings.

Sundresses for the sporty girl

If zero-fuss is your favorite style, look for easy cotton dresses you can pair with flip flops or sneakers. You can even work in some colors and simple patterns, without feeling like you’re all dolled up. My guess is you’ll also appreciate the shift dress shape, which is easy to wear and super flattering.

Shoppers love this simple, easygoing dress for casual, sunny days. And yes, it’s labeled as a coverup, but those who’ve bought it say it works perfectly well as a dress, too.

The 100% jersey cotton garment is available in 16 colors and patterns. The black with turquoise and white neckline is my pick — the contrast is pretty in a low-key kind of way.

Chambray is denim’s softer, friendlier cousin. Wear this dress over your fav sports bra and anchor it with a pair of Converse sneakers. Style doesn’t get an easier than that.

Sundress style FAQs

What shoes should I wear with a sundress?

The type of shoes you wear with a sundress can depend on the occasion and personal preference. Sandals, espadrilles, wedges, and sneakers are popular choices that you can dress up or down. For a more formal event, opt for heels or dressier sandals.

How can I accessorize a sundress?

Accessories can add a finishing touch to your sundress outfit. Hoop earrings, a delicate necklace, or a bracelet can complement a sundress without overpowering it. A sun hat, sunglasses, and a cross-body bag can also add style and function.

What kind of jacket can I wear with a sundress?

A denim jacket is a versatile option that can pair well with a sundress. A lightweight cardigan, blazer, or bomber jacket can also add a layer of warmth and style.

Can I wear a belt with a sundress?

Yes, you can wear a belt with a loose-fitting or curve-hugging sundress. A thin belt at the waist can highlight your curves and add an element of sophistication to the outfit.

How do I wear a sundress in the fall or winter?

You can wear a sundress in the fall or winter by layering it with tights, boots, a jacket, and a scarf. Opt for darker colors and fabrics such as wool or corduroy for a more seasonal look.

What kind of bag should I carry with a sundress?

A cross-body bag or a clutch can be a great choice to carry with a sundress. Choose a bag that complements the color and style of the sundress, and can fit your essentials such as a phone, wallet, and keys.

Can I wear a statement necklace with a sundress?

A statement necklace can add a pop of color and personality to a sundress outfit — assuming the dress doesn’t already have embellishments around the neckline. Just be sure to keep the rest of the accessories and jewelry minimal to avoid overwhelming the outfit.

You've included one of the best to wear during summer. Among these, I'd prefer The sundress for the girl next door collection. Accessories to be included depends on the style quotient of the individual. FOr me, a pair of sunglasses and a hat will do.

These summer sundresses are to die for. My favorite is definitely the bohemian inspired one. With its light fabric and embroidered pattern, it is the perfect dress to wear in the hot summer sun.
