Fan Girl: The Dos and Don’ts of Wearing Sports Jerseys

Sports jerseys are no longer only the stuff of Super Bowl parties. Whether you’re a diehard sports fan or just appreciate the comfort of polyester knit mesh, it’s A-OK to turn your boyfriend’s sports jerseys into wearable outfits. Read on for the dos and don’ts of rocking the sports jersey  — and then show off your fan-girl side with confidence.

Girls, Here’s How to Wear a Sports Jersey

Do Tie a Side Knot

Oversized sports jerseys may be cozy, but without the proper styling they can look like a garbage sack. And when your top resembles a garbage sack, and you’re in that top, well, it’s just not the best look. Create some feminine curves by gathering up the excess fabric to create a cute side knot. Keep the rest of your outfit casual with a pair of denim shorts and flat sandals.

Don’t Wear it as Crop Top

While showing a bit of skin is fine in my book, you don’t want to overdo it. Leave the cropped jerseys that show off your abs to the cheer squad. Keep the jersey as is or take note of my last tip and go with a side knot.

Do Wear It with Long Sleeves

Layering is another trick to add definition to an otherwise-baggy top. Opt for a form-fitting long-sleeved t-shirt in crisp white or another color that complements the jersey. Or dress things up with a turtleneck topped with a lightweight blazer.

Don’t Choose Baggy Bottoms

What you wear with your fan-girl jersey can make or break your outfit. Skip baggy bottoms and overalls in favor of skinny jeans, leggings, or denim shorts. Or, pick up a form-fitting jersey — the type that’s specifically designed for women — and pair it with a  high-waisted pencil skirts for a more polished look.

Do Go Casual with the Hair

No matter how much you dress it up, a sports jersey will always be casual. Stick to the theme by choosing a low-key hairstyle. A pony tail or messy bun are good choices and will cut down on your prep time. If you’re hurrying to get out the door, throw on a baseball hat.

Don’t Wear Heels

Unless you want to look pretentious — which is perfectly fine for certain occasions — don’t wear heels. Use your sports-themed outfit as an excuse to wear comfy footwear. Tennis shoes, flat sandals, or sneakers are great options for game day, or any day of the week when you’re out shopping or running errands.

The last tip is the most important one: don’t overthink it. Whether you’re into the NBA, NHL, NFL or, heck, even the MLS,  the jersey is still a comfy, casual piece. Enjoy that side of it by keeping things low maintenance on game day.
