Should You Use Sulfate Free Shampoo?

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about the benefits of sulfate free shampoo. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, you’re probably wondering, “What’s the deal with sulfate and why does it matter if it’s in my shampoo or not?”

Well, you’re probably familiar with sulfate since it’s the product in your shampoo that makes your hair soapy when you later up and also cuts down on grease. But, unfortunately recent studies have linked sulfate to other problems like dry hair and an itchy scalp and even more serious problems like cancer (although studies are still being done to prove this.)

While you should always talk to your doctor if you have severe allergic problems, many mild cases of sensitive skin can be fixed by switching to a sulfate free brand of shampoo.

Using a sulfate free shampoo might be useful for you if you are looking for a more natural product. Many women of color have also sworn by it because it helps with dry hair. Of course, sulfate free shampoo is ideal for those with sensitive skin and a sensitive hairline. Scratching your head all day long probably isn’t ideal, so if you suffer from that affliction, sulfate-free shampoo might be the way to go.

We should warn you that sulfate free shampoo is quite different from what you’re used to. It does not lather like regular shampoos and might take a few weeks to get used to. It might not feel like your hair is clean even though it is. However, your hair will still maintain a sleek, shiny look just as your normal shampoo and conditioner combination achieves.

So, to answer the main question, “Should you use sulfate free shampoo?” we say give it a try, as many manufacturers are currently removing sulfate from their products. You can even currently see it advertised (similar to organic labeling) with companies showing you they’ve taken sulfate out of the equation.

Even though it's for African-American hair, Creme of Nature shampoo is the best! Been using it for almost 8 years! My daughter's hair is so thick. This makes our hair soft, shiny & so tangle free you don't even need conditioner.

I love both Jessicurl Cleansing Cream and Gentle Lather shampoos. Also am addicted and receive numerous compliments when I use the Island Fantasy scent.

My scalp was constantly dry and I couldn't find anything to stop the drying, itching or dandruff until I switched to a natural shampoo. I now use Aveda and the itching, drying and dandruff is gone...amazing when you go natural.

My kids have heads full of thick curls. Frizz is a huge problem over here. Sulfate free shampoo saved the day. So far my fave for the money is Renpure Organics, it is under $6 dollars at Wal-Mart.
