Stylish ModCloth Dresses We’re Drooling Over

ModCloth may not be our top source for cute dresses anymore, but the once-cool retro retailer still has some stylish bargains and near-constant sales.

The sale that’s on now, for example, offers double-digit discounts in honor of May the 4th. I mean, it’s kind of an odd reason to put the collection on sale, but you won’t hear complaints from me. (Still, I have questions. Why not Cinco de Mayo? Mother’s Day? ) Anyhoo, the sale put me in shopping mode to find pretty ModCloth dresses priced under $75. And boy, did I find some. I listed my top picks below along with the sale price and the regular price.

If you happen to land on this post after the sale is over, though, wait for the next sale to roll around. I don’t see any good reason to pay full price for a single one of these dresses. They’re cute, sure. But they’re also replaceable. Sadly, ModCloth has lost much of the distinctive style that made the retailer so much fun to shop several years ago.

I’d venture to say the evolution of ModCloth from quirky and fun to not-always-that-interesting relates to the retailer’s changing ownership. Walmart bought ModCloth in 2017 and then sold the brand to Go Global Retail in 2019. Through those changes, ModCloth has held on to a few things we loved: Diverse models that look like regular (but still beautiful) people, lots of floral, tie-neck blouses, A-line skirts and dresses, and an upbeat vibe. But the store has lost…something. When I browse the collection at regular pricing, I’m just not blown away.

Things do get more interesting, though, when a flash sale cuts the price points by 20% to 40%. So if you like Modcloth’s retro vibe, watch those sales. Keep in mind that the deepest discounts are for final sale items, which, according to the shop’s return policy, are not returnable.

Red ModCloth dresses

The sweater dress is a style essential for transition months. In the spring, you’ll wear it in on chilly evenings. In the fall, you can add a blazer and wear it all day.

Pair this dress with gold or nude heels, a set of sparkly stud earrings, a nude lip, and a smokey eye. Personally, I don’t care for the fishnets on the model. I’d keep my legs bare unless it’s cold enough to warrant black tights.

True to form for Modcloth, the red mock-neck sweater dress has an incredible sale price of $24. The regular price of $109, however, is unrealistic in my opinion (unless the dress has some magic powers I or something?).

My next pick is a sleeveless, fit-and-flare number. Royal Monk’s Sizzing With Style Fit and Flare Dress has a beautiful shape and a forgiving, stretchy construction. The regular price is $89, so you might wait until this one goes on sale.

Reach for this dress when you want to everyone to know you’re in the room. You might try it with black or dark brown block heels. And though I adore the sneaker-and-dress look normally, don’t try that with this one. You don’t want to be mistaken for a hospital volunteer.

Black ModCloth dresses

An LBD that’s not tight — how refreshing! The sheer lace overlay makes for a beautiful, feminine statement that you can dress up or down. Add fine or midrange jewelry and delicate heels for special occasions. Or swap out the precious metals for more colorful, costume pieces (think BaubleBar) and sandals on your casual days.

The Going Places in Lace mini dress is regularly priced at $89 and on sale for $40.

The Leisure Meets Luxury midi dress features a cute mushroom pattern and pretty lace details at the neckline and sleeves. It’s quirky and sweet, but also super wearable. The midi length and gentle A-line shape will be flattering on many body types, while the neckline shows a bit of skin in a demure way.

The normal price on this piece is $129, but it’s marked down to $50.
