Fall Preview: What the Runways Predict for AW19

Models walk the runway finale at the Fendi show at Milan Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2019/20

It’s that time of year again! We’re staring down the start of fall and the job of curating the closet for chillier days ahead. Luckily the AW19 shows were packed with amazing, covet-worthy picks that translate beautifully from runway to real world.

Here’s what’s in store for fall fashions.

Fall Fashions: 5 Trends to Watch

1. Bold graphics

Naturally there were prints in abundance at Pucci, but splashy patterns also made bold announcements at Roberto Cavalli and Alberto Ferretti. The look is fun and fearless, especially during a season when dark and dramatic hues seem to take over as soon as the first leaf falls.

An abstract print with a neutral backdrop is appropriate even for the office. Try Vero Moda Abstract Midi Smock Dress.

2. Big bows

Bows are glorious, but they can seem too showy and youthful for everyday wear. But designers are never limited by such constraints, and so they threw the eye-catching accent on absolutely everything — Valentino scarves, Chanel hair accessories, Balmain blouses. It was all devastatingly perfect.

Make the big bow work for you with some help from the sleek Boden Thelma Blouse. Also see our related post on how to style the tie-neck blouse.

3. Jumbo sweaters

There’s something so cozy about curling up in an oversized sweater — even better when the runways explain that it’s totally trendy to do just that.

If you’re looking for something that you can wear almost anywhere, but it’s not so huge that it resembles a blanket, try the Aerie Oversized Chenille Turtleneck.

4. Cargo pants

These aren’t the cargo pants you wore in the ‘90s with chunky sneakers. The modern cargo pant, one of our favorite fall fashions, is considerably more sophisticated. You might even wear the new cargo pant to work if that suits your fancy.

These Sanctuary Terrain Crop Cargo Pants are ideal for busy weekends, errand runs, morning school drop-offs, and everything in between.

5. Saffron hues

You know it as the beloved spice that adds character to your meals. But did you know that saffron is the new yellow du jour? Think of it as a richer, warmer mustard. It’s also a bit more versatile and wearable than the original.

Try the Joie Madora Front Button Blouse with a pair of sleek trousers or jeans when you want to add an autumnal glow to your look.
