Dear Budget Fashionista,

Are black denim jeans at all acceptable? I’ve never cared for them, but the director of my department at work doesn’t like blue denim, so we can’t wear it.

Answer: The 80’s are back and so are its jeans. Black (although with gray, yellow, red, and hot pink) denim jeans are very hot right. In fact, I just bought a pair of black jeans about two weeks ago.

The best styles are those that are a bit more form fittings- either straight leg or the skinny jeans. Think a more structured version of the black legging.

Since you’re new to black denim, my advice would be to try a pair from (I am in LOVE with the Sweetheart jeans) for less than $30. If you like them, buy more and/or try out other, more expensive brands.

Here’s some ways to wear them
– with a belted bright colored trapeze top and a pair of black pumps
– with a black blazer or swing jacket, make sure you add a pop of color to the outfit so it stands out
– layer it with this summer’s trapeze and t-shirt dresses and a funky belt.

The big problem with black jeans is that the color tends to . Wash your jeans inside out, in cold water, with a color safe washing detergent.

You do have to be careful how you pair up black jeans. Nothing screams “80s” more than black and bright colors together.  A crisp cotton white or cream color button up or wrap shirt would go nicely with black jeans.

I think Ill pass on this trend though. I had a hell-of-a time keeping my black jeans BLACK 15 years ago.  To me there was nothing worse than faded “black” jeans.

  • loves it! i think black jeans compliment mod/geo print tops esp. well. also love ‘em in a head-to-toe black ensemble, so long as you vary your textures and maybe add patent heels or a purse for shine.

I’m a new convert to Banana Republic’s Classic Straight Leg jeans. Some might find them a bit pricey at $78 (for the black ones I just got) but since their cut is perfect for my body and I LOVE the lighter, more flexible fabric, I shelled out. And I’m thrilled that I don’t have to keep looking for jeans – for some reason I have far more fit problems at the Gap.

The only problem, and it’s kind of a biggie, was the full-on push from the fitting room attendant AND the manager AND the cashier for the BR credit card.

In my eyes, black jeans, especially the skinny (not highwaisted and tapered but skinny) or trouser style jeans were more apropriate for work than simple blue…

  • I absolutely love my Lee Riders black jeans. So much so I picked up 5 pair at Wal-Mart before I moved to Denmark this spring. They fit perfectly, are long enough for my legs, and look good for a relaxing day of shopping or Casual Fridays at the office. Worn with the right top and shoes they will fit into any casual business environment without looking like you’re wearing your weekend jeans. And they’re about 20 bucks a pair.

I love my Old Navy black jeans. I got 2 pair one skinny, one straight leg. If you like the Sweetheart jean they also have a trouser jean.
