What: We can all collectively jump for joy today, because Jil Sanders’ UNIQULO line, J+, is now available in stores. While some items cost a hefty $149.50, many are priced in the $25 to $40 range.
What They Say:
The collection consists of outerwear, denim, shirts, cut & sewn, knitwear, and other goods. The +J women’s collection price range: Outerwear: $39.50-$149.50, Shirts: $39.50, Pants: $49.50-$59.50, Skirts/Dresses: $39.50-$49.50, Cut and sewn: $19.50-$29.50, Sweaters: $29.50-$49.50, Cashmere: $79.50-$129.50 and Accessories: $29.50.
What We Say: J+ has almost everything we need for fall and winter. While there isn’t anything terribly daring in the collection (from what we can tell), it’s kind of a one-stop shop for this season’s basics. Have you checked it out yet? What’s the verdict? If you’re curious, you can browse the line online.
What: If you’ve read this blog for a while, you know that we love, love, love UNIQLO. Well, we recently reported that German designer Jil Sanders had started consulting for the retailer. That relationship bloomed, and now Sanders’ new UNIQLO line has a launch date (or month). This October, you’ll see the first of the line - prices start at a lovely $25. Later on, the rest of Sanders’ clothes will hit stores (there are 140 pieces total; 100 are for women).
What We Say: Yay! We can add another store to our shopping list for fall 09. This is as great an example of penny-saving Designer Fusion as you can get. Looking forward to the line?

What: German designer Jil Sander is the latest designer to jump into the low end, as new consultant for UNIQLO, a Japanese brand we love for its cheap, functional clothing. She joins the brand after leaving her eponymous label in 2004.
What Jil Says:
“The challenge for me is to develop a democratic priced line of the highest possible quality. A lot of you might know me, but let´s not talk about the past, I want to focus on the future. I´m here in Japan for something completely new and different than before.”
What We Say: This partnership makes total sense—both cater to a very fashion forward, less curvaceous, European/Japan/New York based client who are as broke as the rest of us. We’re looking forward to some minimalist, yet memorable, high-quality looks at prices well below the $1000+ range of Jil’s higher end line. Will Jil’s move inspire other struggling designers to do the same thing?
UNIQLO, the Japanese H&M, now has women’s (and men’s) jeans for two for $49.90.
The jeans, which are made of the good denim, not that papery thin stuff that you wash once and falls apart, come in a variety of styles (colored skinny, embellished and cropped are not on sale). The downside? The stores are only located in the New York City area and if you’ve got back (meaning you have hips and/or wear over a size 12), skip this store all together and head to Old Navy to purchase a pair of $19 jeans.
UNIQLO, a funky Japan-based fashion company with stores in the US (mostly in the New York Metro area), is one of our favorite stores for updated basics. Picture practical and affordable high-end fashion and sporty outfits with a stylish twist- sort of like Old Navy, but better. So, word of its upcoming 2009 spring and summer lineup has us excited.
The lineup’s designers include lots of people you’ve probably never heard of, but they’re worth checking out: Shipley & Halmos, Gilded Age, Opening Ceremony, and Steven Alan. Shipley & Halmos and Alan are leading the charge for women apparel. Alan’s collection of bright-colored jumpers, tunics, and dresses will debut in March, while Shipley & Halmos’ summertime separates (as well as another jumper) will come out in May. What we like best? The price range is from $19-$79: which is pretty all we can spend right now.
There’s a relatively new store in the New York area that has joined H&M on my list of bargain shopping must stops. I’ve been a bit reluctant to write about the store, called UNIQLO, because all their US stores are located in the NY/NJ area (but it has 700+ stores worldwide), thus leaving out 95% of the country, but the store is so good, that I just had to write about it.
Straight outta of Tokyo, the store offers premium quality goods at relatively afford prices. Their premium denim jeans look like high-end, but at $39.50 and $59.50, cost half the price. Plus, UNIQLO denim is made of better quality denim than the more expensive brands (thus providing even more support to my thesis that most jeans are WAY over-priced).
From the folks at UNIQLO:
UNIQLO only uses Ring denim, which has a textured surface and is woven from ring yarn to give the jeans a rugged and natural fade. To give its jeans the richest color possible, UNIQLO’s partner denim producer uses a technique called rope dyeing, which keeps the core of each thread white, while giving the perimeter a beautiful indigo color. All of the men’s and women’s denim for the spring collection comes from Japan, with nearly all of it sourced from Kaihara, a premium denim producer founded in 1893 and one of the world’s most renowned denim suppliers.
While the jeans are great, UNIQLO is most known for its amazing selection of cashmere sweaters in every color under the rainbow. Think 400 square feet of cashmere sweaters… all priced under $60. I’ve never been to a place that had as big of a selection of quality cashmere sweaters, for the ENTIRE family (men, women, and kids) for such a good price, in my entire life. It’s like the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of Cashmere Sweaters. In fact, I think Mr. Wonka would even be impressed.
One thing to note…It’s a Japanese store, so it has Japanese sizing. Don’t go there expecting to find a pair of rocking jeans if you’re a size 16 or bigger. However, for petite budget fashionistas, it is one of the only “low-priced/specialty retailer” type stores that sells clothing that is more in scale with your body type.
