Fashion Advice: Cashmere Sweaters On a Budget

December 12, 2006 09:45 AM | Comments (26) | Posted in fashion advice, sweaters, cashmere sweaters

Dear Budget Fashionista,

I’m on the hunt for a good quality cashmere sweater. The max I would spend is 150 bucks. Do you have any suggestions on where to find one? How about buying it online without actually feeling the fabric? Is that advisable?

Answer: First wait until after Christmas to buy anything cashmere.

In regards to where to buy it, my snobby Upper East Side friends, who consider themselves TRUE cashmere experts, swear by the department store Lord & Taylor’s cashmere sweaters. L&T cashmere sweaters come in a whole range of styles, sizes (petite and plus sizes) and colors for about $70 buck.  I own a beautiful turquoise cashmere cardigan that I got for $12.00 at Lord&Taylor’s after Christmas sale.

Another great brand are Vince , which are very nice and very pricey if you purchase them at full retail price. Lucky for us, you can find Vince sweaters at your local Filene’s Basement or TJ Maxx for around $100 (about 50% off retail price).

As far whether or not you should feel the hand (fashion speak for how a fabric feels when you touch it) of the sweater before purchasing it, the answer would be yes . However, the best deals are probably online and if course you can’t feel the sweater on screen. Check to make sure the site has a liberal return policy and you should be fine.

TBF Tool: How to Wash a Cashmere Sweater

July 16, 2005 09:07 AM | Comments (5) | Posted in sweaters, cashmere, TBF tool, tbf tool, washing tips, TBF Tool

No need to head to the nearest drycleaners . . .

Save a ton of money by laundering your cashmere sweaters at home. In fact, gently washing your cashmere sweaters at home will save you money on dry cleaning and prolong the life of your sweater.

First check to make sure the sweater doesn’t have any trim or embellishments that will require it to be dry cleaned. If there are none present, pour about a quarter-sized dollop of baby shampoo into a clean sink filled with cool water. Swirl the sweater around the sink for 1 to 2 minutes and then let sit for 10 minutes.  Drain the sink and gently rinse and squeeze until all the soap is gone from the garment.

Now carefully squeeze the water from the garment, and lay it on a towel. Use another towel (you might need two towels) to soak up the excess water. Reshape the sweater and lay it flat to dry.

When Bad Sweaters Happen to Good Guys

March 7, 2005 11:47 AM | | Posted in celebrity fashion, sweaters, arsenio, bill_cosby, michael_j._fox

Bill Cosby wore them. Michael J. Fox had a whole closet full of them. Arsenio probably got canceled because of them. Yep, we’re talking about ugly sweaters.

Every guy has these sweaters somewhere in their closet. Maybe they were given to them by their senile Aunt Martha, who thought burgundy, gold, and green were really “smart” colors. Or maybe you purchased them during your stint as a manager at the local Chess King. Or maybe your mom bought them to help “brighten” up your wardrobe. Whatever the case, every guy (and their unfortunate partners) has been affected by an ugly sweater.

The Epidemic, which we call “ugsweat”, peaked in the mid to early 80’s and finally fizzled out with the rise of the metrosexual. Although traumatized, Manistas like Kevin, the founder of the site BadSweaterGuy.com, can look back at that the epidemic with the insight of men who have fought the good fight and came out wearing Dolce & Gabbana.
