Sandals with a little bling have been on the radar for the last couple of summers, but we’re not tired of them yet—not by a long shot. We recently did a look for less on embellished flip-flops, and our budget-conscious point of view, we think some bejeweling on our feet is just the thing to kick up a basic summer ensemble without dumping a bunch of cash into something too frivolous. Oh, and bejeweled doesn’t have to mean tween-worthy sequins and beads—we’re seeing more and more metallic chain and link-type details, which might better suit the more subtle among us. The best part is that you can get ‘em on the cheap—our favorite phrase, by the way. Some of-the-moment options we’ve got bookmarked for when the change jar is full:
Women’s Xhilaration Tressa Thong Sandals, Fuchsia, $14.99
Chinese Laundry Kali Jeweled Thong, $44.95, DSW
Women’s Rhinestone Thong Sandal, $10.92, Wal-Mart

What: Dresses continue to rule the retail world as a top selling fashion item this year, and at the moment, the traditional sundress is hot, hot, hot.
What We Say: We’re kinda loving this whole dress revival, and the sundress is an easy-to-wear and easy-to-afford option, so we’re on board. The silouette we’ve got in mind is feminine and 50s inspired, with spaghetti straps, sweetheart neckline, and full-ish skirt (thought it doesn’t need to be full-on June Cleaver mode). What makes it modern? The patterns (splashy florals continue to be big) and the accessories (think gladiator sandals or wood heels, chunky necklaces, cocktail rings).
Our Picks:
Black, green and white Floral Sundress, $29, Newport News
Angela Halter Dress, $22.80, Forever21
Garden Print Sundress, $49.50 at Lane Bryant
OC By Oleg Cassini Floral Print Dress, on sale $67, Dillard’s

Almost as important as the swimsuit (and generally eminently more wearable) is the cover-up. We love them because they make the long walk from the beach chair to the bathhouse soooooooo much less cringe-inducing. A tip? Try on your cover-up to make sure it’s long enough, roomy enough, and cut right so that you are comfortable in it—cool colors and fluid shapes make for the most chic beach/pool cover-ups this season, and getting them for less is tres easy. That’s French for no-brainer.
Some cover-ups we like:
Jersey Cover-Up Dress, on sale $29.50, Eddie Bauer

What: With the mercury hitting record highs all over, “city shorts” are slowly but surely making their presence felt on the fashion front.
What the fashion heads say:Telegraph.co.uk: ..we are not talking about thigh-grazing styles fit only for the cellulite-free: the new breed of shorts is tailored - often cut to just above the knee - and is a flattering, surprisingly sexy option, which is even suitable for work.
What I say: Still a bit iffy about the suitable-for-work part, depending on your particular location and occupation. Regardless, it’s nice to have a new alternative for causal business dress or a dressy night out. If you’re so inclined to give the trend a go, remember that white is still a super-hot option for summer. Budget note: the Intuitions city shorts shown above cost less than $30 at the department store Dillard’s.
