August 8, 2008 07:00 AM | | Posted in sale, shoes, coupon, online shopping, steve_madden, free shipping

What: Through Aug. 10, get free shipping on all orders from Steve Madden

The Lowdown: We love Steve Madden, and we love free shipping, so this is a match made in heaven. His shoes, while not super expensive, aren’t dirt cheap either—but they are stylish, well-made, and definitely worth taking a look at for that must-have item to spruce up your fall wardrobe. And we should add, too, that it’s not just shoes—you’ll also find dresses and accessories to choose from.

Our Picks: We love this Bonanza Slouch Boot for fall, $99.95, because it will go with everything from jeans to skirts to leggings, and will take you all the way through the winter (with a little good waterproofing, natch). Plaid will be big this fall (again) as well, and so we kinda dig this little plaid dress with a drop waist, for $79. And finally, we might top off our order with a fun accessory update, like this fab-looking woven tote, on sale for $54.60.

Shop the Sale:
Click on the image above or go to SteveMadden.com, but hurry—the free shipping offer is only good through Aug. 10.

The Lowdown: Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to take a look at some of Steve Madden’s fall looks—now we can’t wait for the rest! We’re still loving the warm weather and our gladiator sandals, but we’re warming up (hehe) to these styles, too. Check out the boots, towering heels, flats, wedges, and trendy purses.

The Clevverr metallic flats come in five colors, including black leather and black metallic. Sparkly enough to be sweet and trendy, but tame enough to wear with anything, they’re on sale at $41.96, down from $59.95.

If you’re a fiend for stilettos and patent leather, you may want to take a look at the Rappido high heels. The seven options have different details, like patent leather, metallic, snakeskin, faux crocodile, so you’re not just picking a color, you’re picking the material. Now $69.96, down from $99.95.

Fashion Advice: Tips for Dressing for a High School Reunion

Dear Budget Fashionista,

My 10-year high school reunion is coming up and I need help dressing for two events—a happy hour and an evening event.
Help!
Ready for Reunion

Zappos.com

Dearest Ready for Reunion,

For your ten-year reunion you want to make a statement that says: yes, high school was fun, but my life is now even better.

So this is what you do: For the Happy Hour, you want to be casual, but stylish. Wear a nice pair of fitted jeans with a slight boot-cut if your bigger on the bottom or straight legged if you’ve got a slim bottom. Head to Filene’s Basement and score a pair of designer jeans from Seven, James or Citizens for Humanity at a heavy discount (usually between $29.99-$59.99). On the less expensive side try Express, Z. Cavarruchi or Levis. If you can, and only if you can, wear a pair of the new skinny jeans. Buy a nicely fitted blazer that hits you right at the smallest part of your torso (for most women that’s slightly above the waist or right below your butt). Some places to look for great jackets: H&M, Ann Taylor, Bloomingdale’s, and Nordstrom. Accessorize your outfit with high quality fake diamond earrings that look at least one carat in size. All night long, constantly place your hair behind your ears so everyone can get a good look at the earrings. Wear a pair of sexy black pumps and bring a nice little black clutch. Trust me, you will be the most fashionable person at the reunion.

Reunion Evening Event: For evening events, you want to look dressy—but not too dressy.  Look for an empire waist, halter or strapless dress if you feel confident in your arms in any color but black—forest green, violet, and rose are all great colors for an evening event.  However, if you feel uncomfortable with your arms or wish you could have lose a few more pounds before the party, wear the classic little black dress from a store like Macy’s, or Bluefly.com. The dress needs to fit perfectly to carry off this look, so head to your nearest tailor, if necessary. Accessories: wear your diamonds (again,1-carat fakes from Sears and New York and Co. look as good as the real thing). For shoes wear pumps, because pumps elongate your body making you thinner and more statue-esque. Zappos.com and Steve Madden both have a great selection of sexy pumps.

Now the most important thing to wear is a smile. At least you do not have to take gym class again.

Happy Shopping,

The Budget Fashionista

Fashion Advice: Budget Flats

August 1, 2006 10:13 AM | Comments (7) | Posted in shoes, bluefly.com, old_navy, fashion advice, urban_outfitters, payless, zappos.com, dsw, steve_madden, aerosoles

QI have to wear flat shoes for health reasons and I’m also on a budget. I feel like I spend days or weeks looking for fashionable, non-frumpy flat shoes which I can afford. What are some good sources for flat shoes on a budget?

A I’m a big fan of flat shoes and wear them on a daily basis because I do so much walking (New York is such a pedestrian city). Here’s some of my favorite places to score flats for a reasonable price:

Baker Shoes— This mall base store is a great place for trendy flats under $40. Never, ever pay more than $40 for a pair of flats from Bakers because several of their shoes are manufactered by the same folks who make shoes for Payless. Sometimes, you can even find similar styles at the both stores.

Aerosoles—In store, Aerosoles can tend to skew a bit grandma like—but online the store has a wider selection of stylish flats.

Old Navy—Old Navy has a solid selection of ballerina flats in leather and other types of materials for well under $20.00. The shoes won’t last you about 10, maybe 15 wears, and then you’ll have to throw them away. However, from a cost per wear standpoint, the shoes are only $1.50 to $2 per wear. A solid value

Urban Outfitters—Almost always has a few very trendy flats, usually well under $40/ most under $30. Be aware that many of the shoes sold at Urban Outfitters aren’t leather.

Steve Madden—Huge selection of stylish flat shoes in a ton of different colors from patten leather with pilgrim buckles to your basic ballerina flats in cheetah prints. Prices tend range from $29.99 to $89.99. If you see a style you like that tends to fall on the higher end of the price range, wait a week or two—they almost always go on sale.

Barefoot Tess—Great online based store with a HUGE selection of flats from folks like Jeffrey Campbell and Delmans. Most flats are around the $50 to $60 range.

Bluefly.com—Sometimes you can find a deal or two on designer flats from Kate Spade, Delman, Christian Louboutin, etc. Not exactly cheap, but definitely cheaper than retail.

Nine West - Another mall based store with a solid website. I actually think the website is better than the store. Every year, it seems like things get pricier and pricier. However, it’s definitely worth taking a peek at the store.

and Zappos.com, of course.
