Whether you’re aching to show off those fantastic legs of yours, or you’re not really all that warmed up to the idea of wearing shorts, no matter how warm it gets outside (they’ve always been way unforgiving of your figure), we’ve got a very chic collection of budget-friendly shorts right here. And they just may get you rethinking this often overlooked clothing item. Shorts can be worn out on the town, and they’re not always dull when they’re denim. See for yourself with this selection. Afraid of baring too much? Wear a long sleeve top and you’ll feel comfy out and about.

This summer some of us may be hitting the beach with the sole purpose of getting that perfect golden tan, but those of us that are more athletically inclined will no doubt be engaging in some sportier activities than just laying out. For all of the sporty fashionistas out there (or even those who just want to cover up in between tanning sessions) there’s no better option than boardshorts. Just slide on a cute pair and get ready to surf, swim and strut. But the best part is that you’ll look stylish without having to worry about any embarrassing “wardrobe malfunctions” as you ride the waves. Time to check out our high and low picks. Now, which is which?

If you’re looking for something youthful, preppy and classic for summer casual wear, nothing beats a good madras plaid, and we’re seeing it all over right now. We love it for the bright colors and ease of wear—throw on a plaid skirt or bermudas, pair with a white tee, flip-flops, big sunglasses, and a tote bag, and you are totally weekend ready. Do you need to spend a fortune to get on the madras bandwagon? Uh, nope, and we’ll prove it. Here, two pairs of madras bermudas, one over-priced and the other just right (even downright cheap!). So which is which?
On the left, the budget pair, Patchwork Bermuda Shorts, on sale $11.49, AZJeans.com , and on the right, the higher priced version, Ladies’ Bermudas, $90, Cape Madras

For those of us who loathe the low-rise, there’s a backlash coming in the form of a high waist short. We’ve seen high-waisted pants make an appearance on the scene, so it’s a logical leap—but there are some cautions you should be aware of before you buy. Some things to consider:
High-waisted means the focus is on, uh, the waist. Meaning that if you are going to wear them, they must, must, must not be ill-fitting. You don’t have to be wasp-waisted to pull it off, but you do have to make sure they’re not pinching your mid-section to within an inch of its life.
Keep the top half sleek. The shorts will be the focus here—wearing ‘em with a long boxy tunic would defeat the purpose, for example. Pair them with a body-skimming (but not skin-tight) top, tee, or tank, and top with a cut cropped or swing jacket to kick things up a notch.
Our picks for high-waisted shorts on a budget? We dig this cute pair from Forever21 for $19.80, and for a dressier version, these Zinc belted high waist shorts from Macy’s for $38. And for the daring and colorful among us, these high waist 8 button shorts from Wet Seal, for $22 and in sizes up to XL.
What: With the mercury hitting record highs all over, “city shorts” are slowly but surely making their presence felt on the fashion front.
What the fashion heads say:Telegraph.co.uk: ..we are not talking about thigh-grazing styles fit only for the cellulite-free: the new breed of shorts is tailored - often cut to just above the knee - and is a flattering, surprisingly sexy option, which is even suitable for work.
What I say: Still a bit iffy about the suitable-for-work part, depending on your particular location and occupation. Regardless, it’s nice to have a new alternative for causal business dress or a dressy night out. If you’re so inclined to give the trend a go, remember that white is still a super-hot option for summer. Budget note: the Intuitions city shorts shown above cost less than $30 at the department store Dillard’s.
