Wet Seal—can’t we do something about that name? Okay, at least it tells us one thing—we don’t need to take the fashion we find here too seriously. It’s trendy, yes, but that’s the fun of it—pick up trend-of-the-minute pieces (this season, that means sweater dresses, shiny tops, and plaid and houndstooth) on the cheap, meaning a guilt-free fashion indulgence. Our picks for this fall:
Plaid Mary Jane Low Heel, $22.50
3/4 Sleeve Pencil Dress, $25.50
Houndstooth Pencil Skirt, $24.50
Distressed Bomber Jacket, $39.50
You know we love New York & Company —one of our favorite affordable stops for super cute and current workwear separates—and apparently Katie Holmes does too. The Tom Cruise-wife, Suri-mom (isn’t she an actress too?) is increasingly viewed as a chic fashion trendsetter, but apparently she’s not all designer, all the time—she was recently spotted rocking this fab plaid trench from NY&Co., which is currently available in stores for only $74.95 (it will be available online in December). Plaid, of course, is super hot for Fall . . .
Go to New York & Co. to find a store near you.
The Deal: Spend $50 in women’s or accessories items at Target, and get free shipping
The Lowdown: Okay, you know you were going to shop at Target anyway this fall for fashions and accessories—only now you can do it from home and not even have to pay for shipping. Target’s just introduced their Isacc Mizrahi line for Fall, so you should have no shortage of great items to choose from, like this retro-inspired on-trend Double Breasted Plaid Dress, $59.99.

What: The next installment of the GO International collection launches on August 31, just in time for the fall. Prices range from $16.99 to $39.99.
What We Say: Vintage romance seems to be the keywords in this collection. The patterns in this collection, like checkers and houndstooth, hearken back to to the past, while the painterly prints are modern and trendy. Pieces like vests, sweater coats, ruffle blouses all have a retro feel. We especially like the risk taken with the corduroy dress, a fabric we don’t see too often. Some of these looks could’ve been seen on the streets of 1960’s London. We’ve chosen our favorite looks and compiled them above, but there are much more to mix and match.
We like The bottom right outfit—it looks like a two-tone dress, but it’s actually two pieces—the shirt is a funnel necked top ($22.99) and the skirt is black and white plaid ($26.99). Which one is your favorite look?
Our look at See Jack Shop this week happens to concern topics on or below the belt. Check out what they’re talking about over there!
—Direct the men in your life over to the Hanes Underwear for a Month contest. They leave a comment on the post, they’re in the running to win ComfortSoft boxer briefs. They won’t have to wash underwear for an entire month because they’ll have a pristine pair every day.
—White jeans. The idea frightens many women. Did you know they’re taboo for men as well? Eager to broaden their horizons, the males over at See Jack Shop discuss the idea of wearing them and looking great.
—Plaid has all of a sudden grown as a trend. Is it because of Gossip Girl? Perhaps. Here is See Jack Shop’s take on the top five plaid belts for men. They can wear a simple shirt and shorts or jeans, and elevate their outfit with a shot of color at the waist.

The summer sun is heating up, and so are the issues on TBF’s daily polls. Here’s the lowdown on this week’s hot topics:
~Getting ready for a party should be fun, but sometimes it’s stressful figuring out what to wear. So, would you rather be overdressed or underdressed? 49% said they’d rather be a bit too dolled up for the crowd, since it shows the host you care, while only 10% would prefer to look a little too casual. But 40% of our clever readers said they wouldn’t have to worry, since they always check with the host ahead of time.
~Celebrities like Kate Moss and Mary Kate Olsen are known for their trademark looks so we wondered if our fabulous readers had their own signature style elements they call all their own. Most of you (38%) said “no?, but a few of our fashionistas friends had particular pieces that everyone associated with them including perfume (6%), jewelry (11%), lipstick or nail polish color (3%), hairstyle (10%), and uniform dressing (10%). Even if you don’t have a signature for your look, we know you ladies still look fab!
~We all love a deal, but apparently not enough to risk being trampled by a crowd of frenzied fashionistas! 48% said they wouldn’t risk injury or discomfort for a great deal at a sale like Filene’s Basement’s Running of the Brides. 22% said for a great deal, they’d do almost anything and 26% said they’d prefer to wait until after the madness to check out the remnants.
~The prospect of a free shopping spree might be a tad unrealistic, but a girl can dream, right? When asked where they would head first, 53% of readers said they would try their luck at a big department store, while 28% would go to a designer boutique, 10% would stretch their dollar at a discounter like Target, and 6% would look for unique looks at a vintage shop.
~It takes a brave personality and an independent spirit to set fashion trends, but we’re happy to say a few of us consider ourselves to be true trend setters! 9% of those polled said they’re way ahead of the fashion curve, while a more cautious 20% prefer to follow the crowd. Most (69%) of our readers, though, said they wouldn’t consider themselves trendsetters per se, but definitely think they have their own rockin’ sense of style.

Once reserved solely for Scottish kilts, tartan (or plaid) made waves on the 1970s punk scene in London, after being revolutionized by Brit designer, Vivienne Westwood. There was hardly a designer in sight that didn’t use a little bit of plaid this season, and British It Girl, Agyness Deyn, can’t get enough of the stuff.
This season, it’s all about mixing prints, if you’re bold enough. Characteristically way-out D&G layered up clashing tartans in classic red, navy and green tones, as did Prada and Just Cavalli, who added leopard-print tights into the mix, if you thought it couldn’t get any more zany. Designers at Gucci paid homage to plaid’s punk heritage and opted for skin-tight, checked slacks with a studded leather jacket, patent shoe-boots, and smoky eye make-up. Thakoon and Dolce & Gabbana showcased more wearable plaid, in muted grey and brown, and Chanel couldn’t have been further from punk: Park Avenue princesses strutted down the runway in the fashion house’s classic, tweed suits in a subtle tartan, with demure white tights and two-tone shoes – very Blair Waldorf.
It’s festival season, and a festival wardrobe wouldn’t be complete without a pair of rain boots – make like Agyness and pick up a tartan pair from Primark, £8 ($16). This plaid blazer from Topshop could easily pass for Vivienne Westwood, but is a snip of the price at £55 ($110). Miuccia Prada would surely approve of these tartan-print tights – get yours now for £4.99 ($10) in the Urban Outfitters sale! Check, mate.

Inspired by the rise of British fashion houses like Chloe and Alexander Mc Queen (and the British pound), plaid is back for fall. Whether you’re sporting a traditional Burberry plaid or the lumber jack checkered plaid, you should have at least one plaid piece in your wardrobe.
A perfect example of the emergence of plaid is the Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress. I love this dress so much, that If I happened to have $500 lying around this fall (which I guarantee, I won’t), I would definitely add it to my closet. The dress, made from silk taffeta , is available online at Intermix for $465.00.
Now, for those of us unable to spend $500 on a dress, by early fall I’m sure H&M, Zara, Forever 21 or even Jones New York will have a version (although probably not in silk) for a fraction of the cost. If you happen to have the skill of sewing and/or are inspired by the return of Project Runway, then you can try to recreate this dress yourself. This is a pretty common pattern and the only obstacle may be finding the material.
