Q:Budget Fashionista,
I need your help. I’m a 5″1”, 110 lbs, 23-year-old female and I find it very difficult to shop for office clothes. It seems like there are very few fashion options for petite women. Any petite fashion advice?
A: I’ve been getting quite a few questions from petite readers in regards to the sad state of petite fashion. I agree that there’s little, to no, options for truly petite women.

You’ve got a lot of curves, but not so much height, so shopping for a dress can seem like a daunting task. Petite clothes are geared toward women with slimmer figures, but standard plus size clothes are too long, so it’s not as simple as just shopping in a certain section of the store. Here are some tips for finding the right dress for you.

Many of the rules and myths governing petite dressing are as outdated as a pair of spandex stirrup pants.
Don’t believe me?
Just take a look at petite celebrities like Carrie Underwood, Eva Longoria,and Reese Witherspoon, petite fashionistas who demonstrate that rules are made to broken. Using these fabulous stylistas are inspiration, we put together a short list on how to break these rules.
Old School Rule: Short women shouldn’t wear color
New Rule:
- Wearing the same color on both top and bottom elongates your body. Choose a color that’s flattering to your natural tones, and add accessories, like jewelry and a purse, with splashes of color to spice it up.
- Match your shoe color to your outfit as well. If you wear black pants or tights, wearing black shoes can create the illusion of more length to your body.

The Deal: Super stylish petite dresses for under $100 at Nordstrom.com
The Lowdown: Here on TBF we try to provide solutions for ALL women, regardless of size, shape, geographic location, or budget. So while we do a lot of posts for our plus size peeps (Holla Girls!) we try to do as much for our petite peeps (Holla Girls!)- which is a definite challenge. For better or worse, there’s a ton of respectable plus size stores and designers (Torrid, Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Monif C, Abby Z) but virtually no petite specific stores (Petite Sophisticates? Yeah, right). However, there’s one exception: Nordstrom. Nordstrom, especially online, has a solid selection of fashion forward pieces, under $100 bucks, for petite women who want style, but don’t want to look like Miley Cryus. Check out our picks below
