The Deal: Tall Pants at New York & Company Up To 50% Off Select Styles $9.99 and Up and Petite Pants at New York & Company up To 50% Off Select Styles $9.99 and up
The Lowdown: There are many things about New York & Company that make a budget fashionista happy, but pants are near the top of the list—not only does NY&C understand that not all girls fall into the category of “average”, but they also understand that tall and petite girls aren’t satisfied with just two or three styles to choose from—instead, all of their pant offerings are available in three length options, in sizes 0-18. And right now petite and tall sizes are half off. Are we gushing? Sorry.
For spring, you can pick just about any pant style that suits you—we have our eye on black trousers, to set off those bold spring colors or be part of a chic black-and-white work ensemble, like these 7th Avenue Pant with Two-Button Waist Band (tall) for $27.96 on sale, or these 7th Avenue Wide Leg Pants (in petite), also on sale for $27.96. Pair with a short sleeve patterned blouse with some color and sheen, and a pair of fab gladiator platform sandals, and you are spring ready.

Many of the rules and myths governing petite dressing are as outdated as a pair of spandex stirrup pants.
Don’t believe me?
Just take a look at petite celebrities like Carrie Underwood, Eva Longoria, and Reese Witherspoon, petite fashionistas who demonstrate that rules are made to broken. Using these fabulous stylistas are inspiration, we put together a short list on how to break these rules.
Old School Rule: Short women shouldn’t wear color
New Rule:
- Wearing the same color on both top and bottom elongates your body. Choose a color that’s flattering to your natural tones, and add accessories, like jewelry and a purse, with splashes of color to spice it up.
- Match your shoe color to your outfit as well. If you wear black pants or tights, wearing black shoes can create the illusion of more length to your body.
Old School Rule: Heels are the best way to appear taller
New Rule:
- While heels do add height to your legs, choose a shorter height (1”-2”) that will make you appear taller, but not off balance. Too-tall heels can make you look like you’re walking on stilts!
- You can wear straight leg or wide leg pants, just keep them long enough to cover most of your shoes, to keep up the visual of longer legs.
Old School Rule: Don’t wear long skirts
New Rule:
- Avoid skirts that fall at mid-calve, as they will make your legs appear short and possibly stocky. However, ankle-length skirts can be flattering for petites. Pair it with a shorter jacket to create the illusion of length.
- Dresses can be a petite girl’s best friend! If you pick the right length and style, the focus will be on the overall look and not your height. A wrap dress is a sure bet, because it highlights your figure and keeps the focus away from your height.

“SOME PRODUCTS ARE NO LONGER BEING SOLD”
There are few things that we love more than a good jacket. Throw one on with jeans, khakis, a floral skirt, and poof—instant style upgrade. Slip on a pair of kitten heels, and suddenly even running errands feels chic, and there’s nothing that makes standing in the grocery line more tolerable than knowing that at least you look great.
For petite women on a budget, however, finding a jacket that fits is a challenge. Sure, some petite shops carry great selections, but the price tags tend to induce more sticker shock than buyer satisfaction. And tailors are an option, but if it’s more than taking up a sleeve (petite cuts are about shoulder width and hem length, too), it’s probably going to make even a bargain jacket more trouble (and cost) than it’s worth to begin with.
So, in our quest to keep all the short girls looking fabulous, Angela’s compiled a list of places to find jackets that will make you feel six feet tall. The list is, unfortunately, um, short. P.S. to retailers: We’d like more choices, please.
JCPenney. I’ve found really tremendous jacket deals in JCPenney’s petite section. Some styles are a bit outdated, but if you look you’ll find some really classic cuts with great fit and great prices. As always, check out the clearance, especially if you’re not the most common size - my favorite black pinstripe jacket (that fits like a glove) was $19.99 on clearance.
Petite Sophisticate: Though their success (and store availability) has had it’s ups and downs, I’m hanging in with ‘em. A year or so ago, I picked up a beautiful pale green jacket from Petite Sophisticate that fits great - the key here is to hit the sales. My find was on clearance, and though the precise figures escape me now, I think I paid about $30 for a $75 jacket. That’s a deal. And, even better, Petite Sophisticate is getting on the budget bandwagon with a string of outlet stores (click here to see if there’s one near you), and online shopping will be available starting in November, as well.
Macy’s INC line. INC petites are cute, trendy, and, when they’re on sale, priced just right. Look to INC if you want something current and maybe even a little bit edgy. Everybody’s wardrobe needs some of that.
Ann Taylor LOFT. Okay, I haven’t actually purchased a jacket from here, but I have comlete faith in Ann Taylor quality, the cuts are modern, and the prices aren’t completely ridiculous - in fact, go to Ann Taylor to check out some decent sales, going on now.
Amazon.com. Technically not a retailer, of course, but a great place to search for petite jackets for reasonable prices. Today, for example, a quick search turned up this 3/4 sleeve Liz Claiborne jacket half-off, and there’s more where that came from.
As a petite woman attempting to be fabulous while watching the bottom line, I have a complaint, which, for the moment, I will direct at Target.
Target, I am a loyal customer. I purchase skirts, tops, sweaters, jackets, shoes, year in and year out. But where, oh where, are my jeans? Yes, I know you carry short sizes, at least online - but in stores (and I’ve been to lots of stores) I usually find denim cut with an Amazon in mind (like The Budget Fashionista herself, who is 5 ft 10 inches)- or, at least, a woman over 5’5”.
But Target’s not the only one - a good short jean (without a budget-breaking price tag) is hard to find. Petite departments are great for many things, but denim? Not so much. And some stores, like JC Penney, that do offer short sizes give us only three or four styles to choose from, while “average” height girls get a veritable smorgasbord.
Fortunately, while we’re waiting for some major retailers to get with the program, others have already figured out that the vertically-challenged have cash to spend, too. If you’re short (or taller than average, for that matter), these stores have some cute, quality denim made with you in mind:
Old Navy. With sizes ranging from 0-20, in short, average, and long, Old Navy has the budget jean for a wide range of body types all wrapped up. Love love love the Sweetheart jean. And with a top price of about $35, you can afford more than one pair.
New York and Company. While their denim selection isn’t vast, New York and Company offers perfectly acceptable basics, and sizes include 2-18, in petite, average and tall. This is also my go-to spot for work pants that look professional and fit great.
Lane Bryant. Let’s not forget that being short doesn’t necessarily mean being a size 2. Lot’s of curvier girls need shorter length, too, and Lane Bryant offers great looking denim in petite cuts, sizes 14-32.
Gap. I’m including the Gap because, let’s face it, they have great jeans, but the price isn’t always as budget-friendly as I’d like. However, their petite denim on a good sale day? Fantastic.

I’ve received quite a few questions from petite fashionistas in regards to the store Petite Sophisticate. Petite Sophisticate, the lower-priced store for petite fashionistas, is still alive and kicking.
