Fall Nail Trends

What: Fancy jewelry and expensive handbags are so 2008. Manicured nails are the fashion statement of 2009, now that striped metallics, earth tones, and custom-designed nails are all en-vogue. For budget babes interested in doing their own nails at home, experts recommend choosing bold colors—like blood red—or painting dark hues over the top of more opaque pink polishes to get the runway look at home.

Beauty Trend: Matte Gray Nails

What: Nails that looked like they were dipped in concrete are tres chic overseas and soon to become the new silver State-side.

What the experts say: It’s official: In the January 2008 issue of Oprah magazine, there is a big picture of a hand model showing off her gray manicure. “We’re in a time of big changes in the world and basics (like gray) represents stability,” says Leatrice Eiseman, author of More Alive with Color and Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “You’re making a statement about being a bit offbeat.”

What we say: At first, we thought it was the ugliest thing we ever saw, but after a bit, it kinda grew on us (since we recently reported about the gray eye shadow trend, we thought it makes sense.) It’s definitely a conversation piece and if it’s a light enough shade of gray, it could even pass for a dull lavender. While we came across a million silver polishes on our quest for matte gray, it is still a difficult shade to find. ManGlaze recently debuted their Matte Grey Color at a hardcore punk festival in Japan, which is available for $6.66. You know what they say, though; everything is big in Japan.

Sally Hansen Diamond Strength No Chip Nail Color

What: In an attempt to keep her thin, peeling nails polished and pretty for more than a day (which is stretching it), Robin tries Sally Hansen Diamond Strength No Chip Nail Color in Sheer Bliss Frost, $7.49.

The Lowdown: I have been cursed with the worst nails any girl could have. Aside from them always snagging and breaking, my nails seem to have some weird bipolar reaction to polish. I just can’t get the stuff to stay on. Within hours, it’s chipping and peeling off. I’ve even done the soaking them in rubbing alcohol trick. That maybe gives me an extra 12 hours or so. Diamonds are supposed to be a girl’s best friend, so maybe this is one will be my friend? The polish goes on easily and after two coats, dries in around 15 minutes. The color is opaque, but feminine and pretty with just enough shimmer. I finish them off with topcoat. My nails do feel thicker and stronger with this polish on. It takes four days before I notice the first chip, on the corner of my pointer finger. Considering most other brands don’t stick half as long, I am pleasantly pleased.

Yea or Nay: Yea, because not only did the polish give me four days of pretty, pale pink nails, I received quite a few compliments on my chip-free look. Anything that brings on some praise is okay in my book.
