Best Budget Facial Moisturizer?

June 20, 2009 08:34 PM | Comments (0) | Posted in budget beauty, moisturizer

Question: What’s the Best Budget Facial Moisturizer?

Before you spend hours baking in the sun, spend a little money on some skin-saving products. A good moisturizer can do wonders for your natural beauty and your health. Whether you’ll be spending lots of time at work, the beach, or traveling this summer, there’s one thing you should never leave home without - moisturizing lotion with SPF.

While Vaseline continues to be our favorite budget moisturizer, we understand everyone has a different skin type and not everyone can understand the ingredients listed. What’s the difference between an “age-defying cream” and a “beauty enhancer?” Is it all just a bunch of BS? And what the heck does dermatologist recommended really mean?

What affordable facial moisturizers do you trust? If you’re one of those women who gets constant compliments for glowing, healthy looking skin, please impart your wisdom upon the rest of us.

Olay Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming Moisturizer: Product Review

July 10, 2008 09:38 AM | Comments (0) | Posted in product review, moisturizer, olay, Product Review, Olay

What: Karie hopes that the expression “out, darn spot” comes true with Olay Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming Moisturizer; $24.99.

The Lowdown: A few years ago, a momentous event happened to me: I got my first age spot. Smack-dab on my forehead, and not at all in a location where my bangs can hide it. Each month after that first arrival, a new discoloration laid claim to my facial skin—whether an acne scar from too much picking, a sun spot from past (and current—gulp) UV indiscretions or whatever else decided to take up residence on my face. So I’ve made a date with Olay Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming Moisturizer every morning and night to even out my spotty skin, and, I have to say, I’m a bit enamored. It wasn’t love at first sight, however; I’ve never used a foaming moisturizer, and the initial airy feel of it is so unlike the lotions and creams I’m used to that I (unfairly) assumed it couldn’t possibly work as well. Definity proved me wrong, sweeping me off my feet with its high-tech Essential Glucosamine Complex, which purports to penetrate up to 10 layers of the skin’s surface layers, delivering a formula that helps diminish my spotty skin tone while stimulating collagen production to rid me of my nasty fine lines. And that funny foam? Well, we’re BFF now for three reasons: 1) It’s aerated structure holds more than 15 times the volume of an ordinary moisturizer and covers 50% more area than a crème—fancy talk for: it gives me more of what I want without having to use a ton; 2) It’s virtually weightless, and makes my skin feel super-smooth; and 3) It pumps out a little too much for my face, so I slather my neck (which I often neglect) with the remainder. Score!

Yea or Nay: Fluffy foam that delivers on its promise? Out, darn spots and in with Olay Definity!

High vs. Low: Tinted Moisturizer

This summer, we’re looking for a multi-use moisturizer. Layering moisturizer and foundation and sunscreen that will just melt off in the sun isn’t our idea of a relaxing day strolling a boardwalk or playing soccer in the backyard. A moisturizer that moonlights as light foundation and sun protection sounds perfect—a high SPF, a tint of color and the ability to cover up blemishes adequately are requirements. Here are two options—choose the one that fits your budget.

Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30, $36.00
This oil-free moisturizer protects skin from the sun and evens skin tone while absorbing oil and providing medium coverage. Plus, the moisturizer smooths skin with amino acids. This moisturizer comes in six shades.

jane Nearly Foundation Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30, $4.99
This oil-free moisturizer, 31 dollars less than Stila’s, triples as a light foundation, moisturizer and protection from the sun. Our fellow consumers at Walgreen’s reviewed it, giving it three and a half out of five stars. This moisturizer comes in three shades: fair, medium and deep.

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion

What: Angela moisturizes with Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion with Cooling Menthol, $6.99 for 8 oz.

The Lowdown: Dry itchy skin is the unfortunate side effect of dry winter air—meaning that those of us who live to moisturize (well, almost) need to amp up the products in our rotation. Enter Aveeno’s Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion “with Cooling Menthol.” Truly, the idea of “cooling menthol” doesn’t appeal too much when it’s 30 degrees outside, but I guess that’s not what they mean. Anyway, here’s the deal—no fragrance (except a vague mentholly aroma) means no fun for the scent-addicted, but this is more about actual skin care than primping. And it does care for the skin, going on almost like a rich salve, but absorbing immediately with absolutely no greasiness. What it does leave behind is super-soft and non-dry skin that lasts all day. Love that.

Yea or Nay: It’s a Yea.

Buy it: $6.99 for 8 oz., @ CVS, Walgreens, Target.com

Boots Wonderbalm, $8.99 for .84 fl. oz.

What: Angela gives Boots Meditteranean Olive, Almond & Sage Wonderbalm a whirl.

The Lowdown: The name is a mouthful, especially for such an unassuming product in a little bitty tub—one wonders if it could possibly live up to it. Boots, of course, is a huge beauty brand in Britain that made its way across the pond earlier this year. I, for one, am very glad it did, as this balm is really a great find.

Made from organic ingredients blended to provide dry-skin relief, it’s perfect for smoothing on those small areas we all have trouble with—knees, elbows. Heels. Lips. And, my favorite, cuticles—having long battled unfortunate cuticle problems, I’ve found that just a few days of smoothing Boots Wonderbalm along those rough edges has made a huge difference.

Yea or Nay: For the cuticles alone, a Yea, and the rest is just icing on the cake.

Buy It: @ Target, $8.99 for .84 fl. oz., which actually goes a long way.

How to Moisturize Dry Skin

Discuss Vaseline and other great moisturizers in the Fashion Gab forum

The secret to fabulous skin doesn’t lie in a $150 bottle of La Mer, but in a $3 tub of Vaseline. Now before you send me angry emails about clogged pores and La
Mer
related miracles, hear me out. Vaseline has been the secret beauty weapon of African-American women for generations. It’s a a make-up remover, skin softerner, hair gel, and sun burn soother. It can even be used as a smile enhancer (rub a little underneath your upper lip). Ageless beauties like Beverly Johnson and Lena Horne, both of whom could afford to drop big dough on expensive moisturizers, opt for Vaseline to moisturize their dry skin. I bet you even Oprah’s got a bottle or two in each of her fabulous houses and I’m sure Condoleeza got a few bottles stashed somewhere in the White House.

Now if you’re still not sure about the powers of Vaseline, try these alternatives, available at your local drugstore, Target, and Wal-Mart (except for the Mango Body Butter):

Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel. This lightweight moisturizing gel will leave your skin feeling as soft as baby. Try the chamiolle scented version after a relaxing bath.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula, Moisturizing Body Oil with Vitamin E is a great smelling cocoa butter oil that’s easier to use than ultra thick solid versions. Use it right after you get out of the shower.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment is a great alternative for those with extremely dry, chapped skin who want the moisturizing benefits of Vaseline, without the ultra heavy thickness.

The Body Shop’s Mango Body Butter is one of my favorite moisturizers
for dry skin. This rich mixture of shea nut butter and sweet almond oil is a great smelling, creamy, and can be found online at www.thebodyshop.com or at your local Body Shop.

My Favorite Beauty Product: Vaseline

April 18, 2005 12:00 PM | Comments (8) | Posted in moisturizer, vaseline, beauty product, petroleum jelly

This may sound a bit weird but Vaseline is my favorite beauty product. Yes, it’s thick and can be messy , but this petroleum based products has 1001 beauty uses.  As legend goes, this product was found by the chemist Robert Cheesebrough in the late 19th century, who observed local factory workers in Pennsylvania using the rod wax that resulted from the pop rods of the oil wells to protect and heal cuts. Amazing by the products therapeutic benefits, he back to his lab, mixed up so many batches of the key ingredient, petroleum jelly, that he had to use his wife’s vases to hold the product. He added the word “line” to “vase”, and my favorite beauty product was born.

I was first introduced to this beauty wonder by my grandma, Doonie, who used it as facial moisturizer. At 82, you would be hard pressed to find a wrinkle on her face.  Throughout the years, I developed my own relationship with Vaseline.  I use Vaseline as a cheaper alternative to paraffin treatments—slathering copious amounts of the jelly on my hands and feet then wrapping them in hot towels for five minutes for a quick moisturizing treatment.

Still not convinced that Vaseline is a miracle beauty products?  Here are just some of the many wonders of Vaseline.

- Great for rough feet. Soak feet in a pan of warm water for 15 minutes. Remove feet and exfoliate with a pumice stone. Slather on a generous amount of Vaseline and throw on a pair of your thickest white socks and head to bed.
- Pageant participants take a small amount of Vaseline and smear it on the gums above their front teeth to help them smile easier.
- Use a little as a last minute shoe polish (too much could ruin your shoes).
- Purchase or use an old contact case and place a small amount of Vaseline and scoop out the leftovers of a lipstick, mix together in the case and you have your own lip-gloss.
- Use as gel to groom and hold eyebrows into place.
- Use in replace of gel to style and hold hair in place.
