Forever 21 Magazine In the Works?

July 22, 2009 08:31 AM | Comments (3) | Posted in forever21, fashion news, magazine, fashion gossip

What: It seems there’s no stopping Forever 21. After making plans to make its name in the world of home and beauty products, one of our favorite retailers also hinted at an upcoming magazine (via Twitter).

The Tweet:

“Ok tweeps: let’s say, hypothetically speaking, an F21 magazine is in the works. What content would you want to see in said hypothetical mag?”

What We Say: While most of the fashion biz is sinking, the sky’s the limit for Forever 21. Even though print’s going out of style, we’d totally read an F21 mag, especially if it had exclusive discounts and actually focused on real trends, rather than pushing its own merchandise.

So, whether or not you follow the store on Twitter, chime in here - would you subscribe, and if so, what would you expect to see and read?

Vogue Gets Budget Friendly?

July 7, 2009 01:00 PM | Comments (5) | Posted in look for less, vogue, fashion news, magazine

What: You know recession-chic has gone mainstream when even Vogue is buying in. The fashion bible has gone “budget-conscious” for its July issues by introducing “Steal of the Month” items, along with a section full of clothing and accessories all under $500. The frugal focus is part of the magazine’s attempt to become cost-conscious—in light of the economy—and incorporate more products from designers like Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang, who have created high design collections for lower priced retailers in recent months.

What They Say:
“It was a very deliberate decision,” Ms. Singer [Vogue‘s fashion news and features director] said about the cheaper items. “In the past year, I feel a greater need to signpost certain elements we’ve had in the magazine. Maybe we need to make sure the reader can find them more easily.”

What We Say: Call us crazy, but the $145 beach chairs and $449 croquet sets offered up as “recession friendly” options in Vogue hardly feel like budget buys. Nonetheless, it’s nice to see a high-fashion magazine at least attempting to make an effort to list the frugal finds everyday people can afford—even if we’re still not sure who these everyday people are spending hundreds on designer croquet sets.

Kathryn in March’s O Magazine

What: Kathryn is one of 13 experts featured in March’s O Magazine, dishing on the ecommerce site she trusts the most (which is, of course, Target.com). (Is it just us or does the illustration make her look a lot like Oprah?)

What She Says about Target.com: “You can find every size, style, shoe type.. most of it under $30”. Kathryn also is a HUGE fan of the new Isaac Mizrahi for Liz Claiborne line. Those ultra wide leg khaki pants are wicked and the line is relatively budget-friendly, with most items under $300.

‘Budget Living’ is Dead

February 16, 2006 09:43 AM | Comments (0) | Posted in budget, magazine, budget_living_magazine

Despite a successful launch, a slew of awards (including the ASME’s 2004 National Magazine Award for General Excellence), and a recent redesign, Budget Living Magazine is reportedly calling it quits. According to gossip sites like Gawker, rumors have been circulating about the (sometimes) budget focused magazine closing its “discount-loving doors.” The gossip blog might be right—the magazine’s site hasn’t been updated since Thanksgiving.

Jane Magazine has Jumped the Shark

October 1, 2004 01:16 PM | Comments (2) | Posted in jane, magazine

It is official, Jane Magazine has “jumped the shark”. The magazine that, prior to August 2004, I would give up my low fat mocha latte to purchase, has fallen victim to silly advertorials, uninspiring celebrity interviews, and a column by Pam Anderson. They even changed their email extension from @janemag.com to @fairchildpub.com—a sure sign it is swimming with the sharks.

When I first received the “new” Jane, I thought it was only for the September issue (Fall issues are the big moneymakers in terms of ad sales). I gave Jane and the gang a “get-out-of-corniness-free-pass” because they have to eat too. But then October’s issue showed up with the beyond thin Mischa Barton gracing the cover and ads for birth control pills and Genital Herpes drugs—something the old Jane would have found quite amusing. It seems that the magazine that once made me laugh so hard I snorted milk (soy) through my nose, is forever corporate. What’s next for our wayward friend? Giving us the same articles with different titles, like “11 Things to Make Him Say Yes” and then in another issue “11 Reasons He Will Say Yes” or, perhaps, an expose on budget shopping on Rodeo Drive by Paris Hilton.

Celebrity Fashion: Airbrushed Models

September 12, 2004 02:56 PM | Comments (0) | Posted in celebrities, magazine, queen_latifah, marie claire

What you see on the covers of the favorite magazines have been airbrushed, shaped, etc. I betcha you didn’t know that they can even add make-up and can take off several pounds (Queen Latifah on the cover of Marie Claire—hello) all with the click of a button.  That is one reason why I encourage everybody to find their own style—because the style of the “celebrities” you see and may admire is created by a team of stylists, PR folks, etc. If they didn’t have their own personal army—most would be as unfashionable as the rest of us.
