What: Lela Rose Runway Show, Salon, New York City Fashion Week Spring 09
The Lowdown: In the midst of lots of black and hard edges, the Lela Rose Spring 09 runway show came off like a, er, breath of fresh air . . . think feminine, think classic, think chic. But we really wouldn’t have expected anything else. The show echoed much of the asymmetry and ruffle details we’ve seen on other runways, but beyond that—soft, sophisticated, and definitely all-girl. Make that woman. And the colors? Delicious and soothing to the eyes, striking but not bright, in a range of deep blues (which we’re seeing a lot of), soft orange, muted red, pale spring yellow-green, creams and grays, in mostly solids with the occasional subtly-executed print. This is a collection with tons of functionality, from short skirts with simple lines and pockets, to swingy little jackets to easy dresses.
Budget Solutions: As real-life wearers of fashion, we kind of fell in love with this Lela Rose show—the pieces are simple, wearable, and yet special. It’s the details that make them such, the aforementioned ruffles, pocketed skirts, striking little daytime jackets. The jacket shape is something you could probably pick up now (like this Isaac Mizrahi for Target linen blazer, on clearance now), and layer with a basic shell in that sublime yellow-green come spring. We also love that in contrast to many of the chunky, gladiator inspired sandals we’ve seen on the runway, Lela Rose is showing with some super lady-like peep-toe pumps for a little change of pace (take a look at this pair—featuring the bow detail that run’s through much of Lela Rose’s collection—by Caparro at Endless.com, or just wait to see if there’s another Lela Rose collection coming at Payless . . .they’ve been teaming up since 2005.)

What: Drapey, open front cardigans as an alternative to the jacket or traditional cardigan
What We Say: Because it’s feminine and interesting, we like it—however, we have some reservations. 1. Too much draping could add a whole lot of bulk where you don’t want it. 2. All that extra fabric in front could get in the way if you are, say, doing anything other than posing for a catalogue photo shoot. We wouldn’t recommend cooking in it . . . 3. It will probably look dated in about two months. Okay, having said all that—we still like it, we’re just not going to invest a lot of cash into the trend. And we don’t want you to either, so we’ve tracked down a few very budget options, so you can have fun with the look, layering it over the standby basics you’ve already got in your closet, with no regrets.

What: Isaac Mizrahi’s fall collection for Target debuts, and it’s full of transition pieces that will make the browning of leaves and shortening of days easier on all of us. Isaac, we still love you . . .
What We Say: Just when we’re beginning to tire of our summer wardrobe, Isaac Mizrahi comes along and shows us what we’ll be wearing in just a month or so. The pieces are seamlessly woven together using a few elements: bright accents of color among the old standards of gray, black, white and brown, several types of plaid, and some fall florals. We enjoy that short period of time when all we need is a sweater to go outside, and the perfect cardigan for said weather appears in this collection in two different styles and fabrics: there’s the rose-print cardigan, or a French terry version in solid gray. If you’re a fan of dresses, choose from a few simple yet classy options—the shift dress, the boatneck dress, the short sleeve sweater dress and the empire waist dress are easy to match with any other piece in the collection.
Pictured: Who said anything about not wearing white after Labor Day? We’re loving the cotton chintz dress paired with the chic cream cardigan and would wear it to work or out to dinner. The plaid skirt, tie-front blouse and sweater vest at the bottom is a daring, trendy outfit we’ll try to pull off. We’ll pull on suede boots when the weather gets even colder. That pink turtleneck on the right is just the accent of color we mentioned earlier, and it contrasts beautifully with the white and black of the herringbone skirt.
