High vs. Low: The Headband

July 30, 2008 06:00 PM | Comments (1) | Posted in nordstrom, accessories, high vs low, hair, headband

Recently popularized by headband-loving Lauren Conrad on MTV’s The Hills, the headband is a really great hair accessory, especially during those unavoidable bad hair days. A plain wide headband is perfect for keeping your hair out of your face, and give you a pulled-together look. However, a fancier headband with chic embellishments is ideal for evenings out to cocktail parties and even weddings! Even if you don’t want to splurge on different colors and styles, a sleek neutral toned headband should be in every fashionista’s boudoir. We love both of these high and low versions. The circles add a sophisticated touch without going overboard. So, which is which?

Teased, Voluminous Hair: Beauty Trend 2008

June 24, 2008 06:00 PM | Comments (3) | Posted in hair, teased hair, ponytails, hair trend, thick hair, volume

What: Major height and matte texture are bringing big hairstyles back.

What the experts say: Sure, straight glossy strands look both healthy and hot, but a little teasing can go a long way. Runway stylist Guido tells Allure,

“We had been seeing so many simple, sleek, blown-out styles on the red carpet—and that’s beautiful—but it’s time for something new. This hair is about a rougher, matte texture, and using that to reinterpret classic shapes, like an updo or a ponytail, with more volume.”

The tools recommended to build body: flat, natural-bristle brushes; a rattail comb; thickening lotion; hair spray; and dry shampoo.

What we say: A rat what? OK, so we’re not up on our hairbrush lingo, but we find Amy Winehouse’s teased bouffant oddly intriguing, so we’re game for some added hair height. And while we may not go for a sky-high beehive, we can definitely see ourselves teasing our ponytails into pumped-up proportions. Why we love this trend: We can kiss daily—and damaging—blow-outs goodbye; we can skip a day (or four!) of washing our hair; and we can change up the look of our faithful standby style—the ponytail. But, can we build big body on a small budget? Of course!
If we’re going to inflate our hairstyle, we don’t want it to fall flat before our head hits the pillow. Luckily, Got 2b Styltini Double Shot 24 Hour Hair Thickener fattens our wimpy locks from morning to night, and at a mere $4.19, has us pumped. We hate the feel of sticky, crunchy hair and, though this trend calls for tons of hold, we found a hairspray that won’t give us helmet head: Thicker Fuller Hair Weightless Volumizing Hair Spray. It’s weightless, touchable, and contains Cell-U-Plex, a blend of plant extracts, vitamins and proteins to boost not only thickness, but also our hair’s health. For $4.99, that’s a steal. The idea of dry shampoo is so intriguing, but most powder shampoos cost a pretty penny. That’s why we’re psyched about Psssssst Instant Spray Shampoo, which we can spray on our oily roots to sop up any gross grease, but can also use to add texture and oomph to our teased styles.

Great Conditioner for Dry Hair

March 16, 2005 12:00 PM | Comments (0) | Posted in hair, hair_conditioner, natural beauty recipes

Okay there is no need to spend a trillion dollars on hair conditioner. Head to your kitchen for the perfect hair conditioner for dry hair. Here’s the how-to:

Combine 1/4 mayonnaise (the real stuff not Miracle Whip), with three tablespoons of olive oil and 1 egg. Mix together and evenly distribute throughout hair. Cover head with a plastic cap or use an old plastic grocery bag and wrap hair with wet hot towel. Let sit for 15 minutes. Shampoo as usual.

This condition works miracles on thick, dry, lifeless hair. Plus you can make salad dressing out of the left over mix.
