Cut Out the Catalogs: Green Tips

March 19, 2008 by EcoistPaige on March 19, 2008

Finally someone has heard our pleas to stop the catalog madness! We must receive like, what, ten catalogs a week…at least! You’d think someone in their marketing department would know we NEVER purchase from those catalogs (ok some of them we do, but most we do not) and remove our name from their list. After all, those pretty glossies aren’t just costing trees, they’ve got to be pretty pricey in cash as well.

And, Home Decorators Catalog, we are a waste of those trees and your money. Trust us.

Finally, we have a way to prevent unwanted catalogs from being sent to us. It’s called CatalogChoice.org and it’s a free service that allows you to decline paper catalogs you don’t want to receive.

Preserve the environment and your sanity! Brilliant!

Unclogging a Drain, Naturally: Green Tips

March 7, 2008 by EcoistPaige on March 7, 2008

Want a great, natural solution for that clogged drain? We love this tip! It’s not only effective, but it’s also a fun process. If you have small children in the house, consider having them help you. Kids love the reaction caused by mixing baking soda and vinegar, and because this is a natural solution, there’s no need to worry about protecting them from harsh chemicals.

What you’ll need:

Baking Soda

Vinegar

Water

What you’ll do:

Start by pouring 1/4 cup baking soda into the clogged drain. It might stay around the surface, which is OK.

Pour 1/4 cup vinegar into the drain.

Watch fizzies erupt from drain. Giggle with your kids, or the kid inside of you.

Wait 10 minutes. Boil water in the meantime.

Pour boiling water into sink. This will flush the solution through your pipes.

Repeat process if you have a particularly nasty clog.

Note that this is a good process to go through occassionally in order to maintain free-flowing pipes.
