A clothing swap party sounds like a great idea on paper, but is it easier said than done? It could be a fun way to get rid of closet clutter and freshen up your wardrobe, or it could be a total disaster.
What if all your friends are different sizes? A gathering like this could just bring attention to this fact. A clothing swap also makes us think of that White Elephant gone wrong - remember when you gave up an expensive bottle of wine for a tacky snow globe? So unfair. However, in this recession, a clothing swap party can be an innovative and creative way to shop, assuming you’ve got the right group of stylistas in attendance.
So, what’s the verdict? Have you ever thrown or attended a clothing swap party? And if you haven’t, would you consider going to one if you were invited?
What: Get a free beauty gift with purchase during Nordstrom
Anniversary Sale.
What We Say: Most of the time, we shop at NORDSTROM Rack because the prices at the department store are a bit too steep. But with their Anniversary Sale, we can purchase high-end beauty products and get free make-up, skincare, and perfume. In pouches, which we can use to store make-up. The brands offering gifts with purchase vary from the high end to very high end: Lancome, Clarins, Bliss, Christian Dior, and more. We like the Lancome and Estee Lauder offers the most: several free samples, in a pouch, with a purchase of $29.50.
What: Try before you buy! Get 3 free samples with every Beauty.com order. Take advantage of this great opportunity to experiment with different scents and products.
What We Say: Who doesn’t love a sample? It’s like owning more products than you actually have. Try out expensive haircare products and face creams. You will figure out if they actually work and if you fall in love, you can splurge on the real deal with the confidence that you will actually make use of your purchase. Choose from products by Frederic Fekkai, Curve, Smashbox and more! Beauty.com is a great one-stop shopping site—get all your make-up, skincare, haircare and more. The samples are an added bonus.
What: Buy 1 Get 1 Free— probably one of our favorite things to hear a salesperson utter. Right now, buy one pair of sunglasses at New York and Co. and get a second pair for free. Sale ends July 12.
What We Say: Sunglasses are necessary to protect our eyes from harmful UV rays, but they’re also one of those accessories that we keep needing to buy more of—we lose them, we scratch them, and they fall into the unreachable areas of our cars. Designer sunglasses are a no-no when they’re at such risk. New York and Company is helping us out with our problems with their affordable and stylish shades. We suggest taking advantage of this sale, and placing your second pair in a safe place, preserving it for it’s most needed.
Check out our picks:
The City Style Rhinestone Sunglasses are great when you want a little bling for your look. $19.95.
The City Style Signature Sunglasses come in three colors—they’re simple and unassuming, when you need a stylish low-profile. $16.50.
Pictured: The City Style Metallic Sunglasses come in seven subtle colors, and the shape is big enough to be trendy, but small enough so you’re not obnoxiously bug-eyed. $19.95 each.
The Deal: It’s simple: Purchase two specially marked Herbal Essences shampoos or conditioners or one of their hair coloring kits, enter the UPC codes online here, print out the redemption form, send ‘em in along with the receipts from purchase, and in 4-6 weeks you will get a voucher for a free manicure or pedicure at a participating beauty salon.
The Lowdown: The wait seems long, but do it now and you’ll get your pedicure in time to go to the beach and not be afraid to wear flip flops. I wish the deal was for a free manicure AND pedicure—it’s going to be a difficult decision for me. Herbal Essences’ shampoos and conditioners have changed a lot over the years (remember those steamy shower commercials?) but their products are dependable, so at least you’re buying products you’re actually going to use.

Reader Melissa sent me this link for free personalized christmas/holiday cards. Vistaprint, the free business card people, are offering 10 holiday cards for free. Personally, I’m not a big fan of spending tons of money and time on holiday cards that people will through away the week after christmas, so free cards is something that definitely appeals to me. Of course, the cards cost money after the first 10.
Perhaps, the cheapest way to spread the holiday cheer is via a email card. Try site like Bluemountain.com and 123greetings.com.
