Bold Nails for Fall ‘09

Fall Nail Trends

What: Fancy jewelry and expensive handbags are so 2008. Manicured nails are the fashion statement of 2009, now that striped metallics, earth tones, and custom-designed nails are all en-vogue. For budget babes interested in doing their own nails at home, experts recommend choosing bold colors—like blood red—or painting dark hues over the top of more opaque pink polishes to get the runway look at home.

Budget Fashion’s More Than Basics

September 23, 2009 04:00 PM | Comments (1) | Posted in fall fashion 2009, budget fashion fall 2009 colors

What: Lately, everyone’s been talking basics. Basics, basics, basics...basically (forgive us) meaning clothes you can wear for all kinds of occasions and weather, that can be easily transformed through mixing and matching and accessorizing. However, we might have missed the boat. Apparently, shoppers “are not playing it safe” but are actually getting bolder with their style decisions. Except this time around (amid the recession), they’re just looking for more jaw-dropping pieces. By working with their current wardrobe and seeking out dramatic clothes that also offer up a lot of value, Recessionistas are simply finding a new and affordable style - not a bland and basic one.

What They Say:

“(Consumers) are purchasing with more thought,” said Julie Gilhart, senior vice president and fashion director at Barneys New York. “If something is expensive, it better look and feel the price, more than just having a ‘label.’”

What We Say: We’re glad someone’s finally giving us budget fashionistas some credit - we know how to shop on the cheap without sacrificing our sense of style! How have your shopping habits changed (if at all) in these touch economic times?

The Top Colors for Fall 2009: Fall Fashion Guide

We’re pretty enthused about the Pantone Fall 2009 Color Guide , which is vibrant and sophisticated - without being controversial. There’s enough diversity to suit all skin tones, and all of your options are super “wearable.” There’s nothing boring about this year’s palate, either (gray has replaced brown as the new black).

Golden/Honey Yellow
This is, arguably, the highlight of the season. Whether you’re donning a long trench coat or thin belt in this bright, brown yellow shade, it will perk up your outfit and probably your mood, too. In this recession, fashionistas are looking for an optimistic, yet familiar color to guide them through fall. Although you can’t lose with yellow, it’s great for extra layers and accessories, as opposed to your main pieces of apparel. Yellow looks very different on one person to the next, too, so be careful if you’re shopping for it online (if the online model is paler or darker skinned than you, you could be disappointed with the result when it ships your way). However, for ladies with a darker skin tone, yellow’s usually a good bet.

Soft Red/“American Beauty”
Designers really brought things back to basics on the runway this year, particularly with red. Instead of messing with the classic color, they simply let it be. True, patriotic red is certainly one of the major themes of fall 2009.

Deep Purple/“Purple Heart”
Something’s got to spice things up and that’s just what purple will do this year. While the majority of fall 2009 colors are pretty predictable, this one’s bold and inspiring. Makes a great accent or even dominating color for an outfit. Like red, purple’s also beautiful on every skin tone.

Teal Blue/“Majolica Blue”
This surprise color is not as ubiquitous as red, yellow, or purple, but it’s one of our favorites. It’s a bit harder to execute however. Make sure that when you wear teal blue, it’s not fighting with other colors for attention. Pair it with simpler or lighter colors (like grey). This color tends to look best with lighter skin tones.

Soft Pink/“Burnt Sienna”
This is a very sweet color that contrasts well with darker ones, like black of course. But try pairing it with other lighter colors for even more of an eye-popping effect.

Pinkish Purple/“Rapture Rose”
Take “Purple Heart” down a notch if you’re looking for an interesting, but not super attention-getting look.

Olive Green
Always a crowd pleaser, olive green tends to pop up year after year. It’s a happy, playful, yet elegant color that can totally Make an outfit. Even a plain olive green shirt will get you all sorts of compliments - especially if you have darker skin.

The “New” Black/Iron
Even though black will show up a lot, it’s overrated this year. Instead, look for shades of grey that, well, aren’t quite grey - closer to blue. This lively “new” black can be the foundation for most your outfits, and you’ll love the slimming effect. If you like to play it safe, this lighter, animated alternative to black is a great place to start. Gradually introduce more daring colors into the mix until you’re comfy branching out into more colorful territory.

Budget Handbags

“SOME PRODUCTS ARE NO LONGER BEING SOLD”

What: Handbags updates for fall that won’t require a federal bailout for your bank account.

What We Say: Right now, the word “budget” has new meaning for many of us, in light of the current state of the economy. That doesn’t stop the fashion world, however, from dangling the season’s new handbag trends (among others) tantilizingly in front of us. A handbag, of course, is something we might normally suggest you could invest a little more in, but if your cash is limited and your wardrobe could use a quick and inexpensive boost, we’re thinking that a very budget version (under 20 bucks) of one of the season’s hot styles is just the thing to a) boost your mood, b) boost your style quotient, and c) keep you solvent for another week or two.

The Clutch

For at least a couple of seasons now, the clutch has been the handbag to have. This fall is no different, and texture and color are key. We like:

City Style Snake Clutch,  in 6 colors, $16.95, New York & Company

Alexis Reptile Clutch,  $18.80, Forever 21

Filond Croc Print Clutch, on sale $9.98, Aldo

Mossimo Embossed Clutch, purple,  $16.99, Target

The Satchel

Satchels are kind of a happy medium between a traditional structured shoulder bag and the big roomy hobos we see everywhere. Color and shine keep the look modern, and chain detail is big for fall as well. We like:

Xhilaration Ombre Satchel,  $16.99, Target

Limited Edition Satchel,  on sale $19.99, Target

Belted Satchel,  $19.99, Charlotte Russe

The Postal/Messenger/Crossbody Bag

Need a bag that’s both form and function? You’ll find the postal/messenger/crossbody bag (yes, it’s a broad category) to be stylish and useful, and modern, as long as you keep the color-texture-shine mantra in mind. We like:

City Style Crinkle Messenger, on sale $14.97, New York & Company

Xhilaration Crossbody Bag,  $12.99, Target

City Style Crossover Logo,  on sale $13.97, New York & Company
