We’re usually all about asking readers for tips on where to buy the best beauty and fashion products on a budget, but we have to say, these days our shopping budget is being stretched migh-ty thin. Meaning we need to be more frugal than ever, but we still want to be fabulous—we just can’t help ourselves. We know your auntie/grandma/best friend has shared some kind of home beauty secret with you (using stuff we probably already have; Kathryn, for example, has extolled the virtues of a simple bottle of olive oil), and now we’re asking you to share with us. What’s your favorite super-cheap at-home beauty secret?

So I’m reading my issue of House Beautiful (which I got for free because Budget Living Magazine tanked) and I found these great tips on how to make your own duvet cover and shower curtain using a old table cloths.
Here’s how to do it:
Duvet Cover: Find an oversize old tablecloth. Measure a queen duvet cover. Take a white linen (or any white sheet) and mark it off with the measurements. Pin the tablecloth to it. Cut off excess fabric. Sew them together to make a pocket.
Shower Curtain: Stitch together a different colored fabric onto the back of a tablecloth. Use a sewing machine to make buttonholes on top of the curtain. You can also use a kit to install grommets, making sure they’re evenly spaced. Hang with decorative hooks and a hotel or plastic liner.
This spring, use a floral pins to add a much-needed splash of color to your outfits. The accessory, which showed up during the Spring 2006 fashion shows and is currently being worn by fashion trailblazers like Miss J from “America’s Top Model”, retails from $4 at stores like H&M to over $20 at major department stores like Nordstrom. Now, you “craft challenged” fashionistas may decide to brave the lines at your local H&M to purchase the accessory. However, for those of up to this simple craft challenge, my advice is to get creative and make your own.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A silk flower (they usually come with two to three flowers per stem)
- Glue gun (with glue of course) or some really strong fabric glue
- Package of undecorated hair clips or pins
(These items may be purchased at any craft or dollar store. Remember to check your local papers since craft stores like Michael’s often have deals on silk flowers)
Instructions
Remove the flower from the stem and cut off any extra fabric or plastic at the base. Heat up the glue gun and apply a thin line to the flat side of the barrette (applying it to the flower, as I learned, it not a good idea). Press the flower to the base and hold for about 10-15 seconds. Sit to dry.
I’ve made several floral pins for myself and for friends and family members as gifts. I usually purchase my flowers from the local dollar store and make about 3 flower pins for less $4; cheaper than buying a floral pin from H&M.
If you have a great fashion craft, send it to me. I might try it out and blog about it.

Ever since I bought my gun for $2.29 at my local Wal-Mart (yes, I shop at Wal-Mart
—yes I’m evil, and yes I will die a painful death and have to spend an eternity in hell playing scrabble with Sam Walton), I’ve been a glue gunning fool. I imagine myself as the Annie Oakley of the fashion world, wielding my glue gun with reckless abandon, making enough floral hair pins and jeweled brooches to accessorize the entire population of New Jersey. Every frugal fashionista, bargain shopper, budget fashion lover, etc must own a glue gun. Glue guns open up a whole new world of fashion options for you, allowing you to save money by creating your own accessories.
Things I’ve done with a glue gun . . .
I’m always looking for innovative ways to use my glue gun—please post your ideas below.
