What: Daffy’s has just launched a new service called the Truck Tracker. that allows “fashion freaks” (their words not ours) to know when new stock will reach the stores. Shoppers can track the trucks via Daffys website or via their twitter feed that is automatically updated every time a truck leaves and arrives.
What We Say: This is a very smart use of technology by an off priced retailer that hasn’t always had the best advertising ideas (hmm, those mannequin ads??? the term “fashion freaks”??) and has a habit of over using technology (their website). However, the tracker idea is solid and helpful- now you can plan the best time to visit your favorite Daffys store.
What: Could it be true? Layaway (when you put items on “hold” for a period of time and make payments toward the purchase of the item) is back.
What They Say: New York Daily News: “The old-fashioned purchase plan, which had its heyday in the ‘20s and ‘30s but dwindled in the days of easy credit, lets shoppers who can’t afford full price at checkout pay as they go. But instead of putting that toy or new coat on plastic and bringing it home, buyers leave items on hold at the store until they’re all paid up.”
What I Say: Yipee!! I have very fond memories of layaway (also called “Lay-By”), as it was the only way I was able to stock my closet full of Girbaud jeans back in the day. Now, with access to credit limited and bank accounts running empty, it makes sense that layaway makes a comeback. Also, layway is a lot less risky than issuing a credit card to the customer, as the entire value of the items aren’t lost if the customer doesn’t comeback for the items, but the entire amount owed on a credit card can be lost if the customer defaults.

As a bargain shopper, I spend a lot of time in messy, disorganized stores. Even though great deals can be found in these stores, I must admit some stores get on my last nerve (hello, Daffy’s could you at least ATTEMPT to pick the clothes up off the floor) So, here’s some tips I’ve gathered over the years to help me shop a disorganized store. I’m always looking for new tips, some please feel free to add your own in the comments section below:
I just got an email from one of my favorite shopping clients wondering if Daffy’s, the East Coast off price retailer that sells all those MaxMara and Marina Rinaldi cast-offs for less than $40 bucks, was closing. Since the store is one of the best places to buy quality underwear, and as you know undergarments is my current clothing obsession, I called my contact at Daffy’s headquarters in Seacaucus, NJ to find out the scoop. Apparently, the company has closed two stores, the one on 18th street in Manhattan, and one in Virginia. While I’m happy the store isn’t clothing, it definitely needs to rethink it’s stocking strategy. Go into any Daffy’s, at any given moment, and about 90% of the store is junk—damaged, dirty, and just plain out of style. Yep, it’s $4.95, but it has a huge run, dirt stain, etc. down the front. Plus you have the H&Ms, Loehmanns, and Target’s of the world, who do inexpensive fashion much better. Nonetheless, I need underwear, so I’m glad Daffy’s is still around.
