A nice black cocktail dress and a stylish pair of black pumps (with at least a 2.5 inch heel) is a safe look for New York and works with all shapes and sizes (just make sure the dress hits you between your lower thigh and knee). Jazz it up with piece of colored jewelry (red is a really hot color this fall or break out your turquoise from last season). Black may be boring, but it’s a great option for NYC.

I am attending a night wedding aboard a river cruise in Newport Beach. Is it appropriate to wear a floral-ish print skirt, solid color sweater top with pashmina scarf and white sling back shoes? Or is this too “daytime” for a wedding?
A: Although this outfit would be fine for a day time wedding, it’s a little too “day” for a night wedding. The wedding is in the evening on a boat, so think about what you would wear to a dinner on a cruise or what you would wear to a cocktail party. Fashion Advice: Is it Okay to Wear Black to a Wedding?
Dear Budget Fashionista,
I have a wedding to attend in late June and I found a black dress with small white polka dots that I love. Is it a fashion don’t to wear black to a wedding?
Answer: While wearing black to a wedding shouldn’t necessarily be your first color choice, it’s not as much of a fashion “faux pas” anymore, especially for formal evening weddings.. My advice is to where the black polka dotted dress (polka dots are very “in”, right now) but pair it with a red/yellow/white belt and a similar color shoe to brighten the outfit up a bit. Answer: Your daughter needs take a big step back. Of the many things you have to spend money on for your wedding outfit, bridal shoes should be at the bottom. Why? I am getting married in July - Yipee! I was wondering if you have any suggestions of where to locate bridesmaids dresses that will not take months and months to receive and can fit modest budgets.
Answer: It used to be that bridesmaids dresses were where good taste went to die. Any joy you felt for your friends pending nuptial was replaced by the dread of having to pay $300 to wear some ugly puffy dress. Fortunately, times have changed. Here’s some great options for bridesmaid dresses on a budget:
1. Coco Myles has great customizable dresses that are available in a variety of colors and sizes (from 2- 32). The dresses start at $125, which is a bit pricey, but it’s a great option if you have a wide variety of sizes and shapes in your wedding party.
2. You can also purchase formal dresses from the Merona Target line at Target.com. The big box retailer has a pretty impressive collection of formal dresses, most for under $50 in sizes 2-18.
3. You can also take a peek at this summer’s new girlie cotton dresses, available at stores like Gap, J Crew, and Old Navy
. Make these dresses bridesmaid formal by putting a wide ribbon around the waist and asking your bridesmaids to wear heels.
4. Also try stores like Newport-News.com, Spiegel.com, and Chadwicks.com
5. You can also go the traditional route by heading to a place like David’s Bridal. The store has a wide range of sizes, but the look can be a bit generic.
Last but not least, many brides are choosing to let their wedding party pick their own dresses. This is perhaps the cheapest option, but you run the risk of your bridesmaids choosing a dress that may be a bit too casual.

After the Wedding: Five Quick Uses for Your Wedding Dress
1. Make a Quilt. If you have a family member or friend who is into quilting, you can have them turn your wedding dress into a quilt. This is a great option for those who don’t have children or only have sons (it makes a great gift to them when they’re getting married)
2. Dye it. Depending on the fabric, you may be able to have your dress professionally dyed, so you can wear it again as an evening gown.
3. Shorten it. Have the dress shorten and wear it as a cocktail dress
4. Sell it. Hopefully, you will only get married once, so if you’re not the sentimental type, sell your wedding dress on eBay or craigslist. Often, you can recoup up to 75% of the price of the dress.
5. Save it. You may have a family member who would be interested in using the dress.

I am wondering if you have any advice on finding a couture wedding gown on consignment/resale or at an otherwise great price. I refuse to believe that I have to pay $3,000 for a fab gown.
Answer: Here’s some places to definitely check out—
- Last Call Neiman Marcus. LC Neiman Marcus often carries a selection of gowns from major designers like Vera Wang
, Reem Acra, etc. for a fraction of the cost. A friend got a Vera Wang
- Filene’s Basement. They have an annual bridal gown sale that is one of the most hotly anticipated wedding-related events of the shopping season. You’ll find deals from major bridal designers (although most things are a size 10 and below). Head to www.filenesbasement.com for locations and dates for the event.
- eBay. I know it sounds crazy, but you can find great high end wedding dresses online at eBay.com. Just do a search for Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, etc and see what comes up. Many are brand and are being sold by women who weren’t able to use them for some reason (left at the altar?).

Local Thrift Shops
Thrift shops can offer wonderful bridal treasures, if you don’t mind wearing a second-hand dress. It’s always worth taking a look at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill stores. In New York City, also check out Housing Works Thrift Shop in Chelsea.
If you can’t find your perfect dress at any of these stores, try finding it on the internet. Online bridal shops like CocoMyles, Watters.com and Bridal Shop at Yahoo can offer a wide range of sizes and cheaper prices because there is little store overhead. Also try eBay, which has a huge selection of plus-size bridal gowns, some new and some not so new. When using eBay, make sure you ask for several pictures of the item and purchase with a credit card that has buyer protection—not a debit card. That way, if any problems develop, you might be able to get a refund from your credit card company.

Mother of the Bride Outfits for Hot Mamas
Dear Budget Fashionista,
My daughter is getting married in the fall. She is having a casual wedding and I still have not bought an outfit. I am interested in either a dress or a pants outfit. Any suggestions. Color is my choice—I do not prefer black. I am in my early sixties and wear a size 8-10. I would like to get something a little more than the run-of-the-mill outfit. Can you help? I live in northern NJ and drive so I am flexible on where to shop.
Answer: Why not try wearing a casual pants suit? Budget Friendly stores from Macy’s to Lane Bryant to Off Fifth, Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet (Jersey Garden Mall and Bergen Mall), all carry stylish yet simple pant suits (stay away from the sequins) that you can easily jazz up with a large bright flower or stylish church lady hat. Depending on when in the fall your daughter is getting married, you could wear a nice khaki color or fabulous orange (early fall) or a darker green/navy blue (late fall). For the most part, avoid colors that are too bright (shocking red, bright yellow, etc), as that will take the focus away from your daughter and you will dominate the photos.
Another idea is to check out the dress collection at stores like Lord & Taylor (Which, by the way, ALWAYS have coupons. Head to the store on Fridays for the best deals). Inspired by 40s sirens like Rita Hayworth and Greta Garbo, this season’s dresses provide coverage (knee and below length, with sleeves), while adding a bit of pop (form fitting and hint of cleavage).

I am a young (49) soon to be mother-of-the-bride. I have been searching for something stylish, but all the dresses I’ve seen are for 60 year olds! What are some tips to help me find a hip mother of the bride dress without spending a fortune?
A: When I got married, my mother, who is relatively young, hip and fabulous, faced the same dilemma. Here are some tips that we used to help her find a hip mother-of-the-bride dress:
1. Check out your favorite designer. Buy a dress from your favorite designer that you can wear after the wedding, getting more mileage for your bucks.
2. Think outside of the box. Unless it’s a formal wedding, leaving the sequins at home. Try a different option like a nice pant suit. Stylebug.com has some classy evening suits by designers like Valentino and Escada.
3. Avoid Bridal Shops. Bridal shops tend to carry ugly, sequined nightmares in horrible muted pastel colors. Try online stores like Bluefly.com , and SmartBargains.com
4. Get it made. This is great option if you know someone who can really sew. Also, try calling your local fashion design school and get your dress designed by an up and coming designer.
5. Bring your daughter. In an effort to be hip, make sure you are following the style that your daughter has set for the wedding.
How To Find A Great Mother Of The Bride Dress On A Budget
Just cause you’re the momma, that doesn’t mean you have to look frumpy. We have a couple of tips to help you look fabulous for the big day.
1. Shop Early – Since most weddings are planned well in advance of the actual date, moms of the bride should take advantage of the end of season clearance specials and discontinued dresses that are often offered for way less than you will find anywhere else.
2. Expand Your Territory – Even if you live in the smallest town, the internet brings nationwide shopping right to your doorstep. Browse styles, colors, and designers online at different locations to compare prices. Many times there will be discounts available only to online shoppers. If you find something you love, go first to a dress store where you can have precise measurements taken before ordering. Also, it may be wise to have an alteration specialist on hand in the event you need some additional touch ups to the dress. Do not order online if you are in a hurry for a dress.
3. Capture Your Style – If you do happen to find a dress or two you love online or in a store but you can’t afford at full price, shop around online to find a similar dress that may be on sale at another location.
4. Think Outside of the Wedding Store – Interestingly, you can often find dresses that are very similar to those found in a wedding shop but cost way less if they are bought in a non-wedding store. Try a nice, dressy pants suit from a store like Ann Taylor or check out the clearance racks of your local Macy’s or Dillards for suits from brands like Tahari. Seems that putting the word “wedding” in front of another word, raises the price. Instead of shopping for mother of the bride gowns, try looking for shops that carry evening wear, cocktail dresses, or formal wear.
5. Go Consignment – Consignment shops are a great place to find an affordable mother of the bride dress. Shops typically are very particular about the merchandise they resell and since many mother dresses are only worn once, you can often find a basically brand new dress for a considerably less price.
6. Think of the Future – In most cases, wedding attire for the wedding party and parents of the bride and groom are bought simply for that one occasion. When shopping for a dress, consider a basic style that will be suitable for other occasions post-wedding. While you may be extending your budget a bit for the wedding, you could end up saving yourself top dollar down the road by having a nice, formal dress for other occasions. Skip beads and sparklers and go for basic but beautiful.
7. Budget Borrowing – If you find yourself in a situation where you have a non-existent budget when it comes to a mother of the bride gown, perhaps there is a relative or friend that would be happy to lend you their own dress. But make sure they’re a distance the relative or didn’t wear the outfit to a wedding where they were photographed.
