Women’s Belts as a Budget

October 8, 2008 05:00 PM | Comments (1) | Posted in accessories, fashion trend, belts, fall fashion 2008

What: The hottest looks in belts for fall? Think statement—meaning big, bold, embellishment, metallic, color.

What We Say: Belts are one of our favorite budget ways to update the wardrobe without borrowing from our 401k (and these days, there’s not much there to borrow). It’s an item you don’t have to spend a fortune on, because, quite frankly, at a glance we can’t tell the difference between a $6 patent skinny belt from Forever21 and a $185 patent skinny belt from Barney’s. This fall belts are particularly fun because there are so many options to choose from—everything from big bold pieces with gems and studs, metallic finishes, and so much more. So go ahead and pull out those tried and true basics—the white button down, the black skirt, your favorite pair of jeans—and make them modern, for less. Some fall belts we think just might do the trick (all under $25 each):

Bow Belt, $15, Forever21

Fashion Focus Black Faux Leather Wide Belt, $24, Bluefly.com

Tuxedo Triple Latch Belt, $8.80, Forever21

Belt with Silver Mod Style Buckle, $8.49-$16.99, Target

Double Rose Sash Belt, $24, Spiegel

Skinny Sparkle Metallic Leather Belt, on sale $19.99, J.Crew

City Style Patent Stretch Belt, $15.96, New York & Company

Our look at See Jack Shop this week happens to concern topics on or below the belt. Check out what they’re talking about over there!

—Direct the men in your life over to the Hanes Underwear for a Month contest. They leave a comment on the post, they’re in the running to win ComfortSoft boxer briefs. They won’t have to wash underwear for an entire month because they’ll have a pristine pair every day.

White jeans. The idea frightens many women. Did you know they’re taboo for men as well? Eager to broaden their horizons, the males over at See Jack Shop discuss the idea of wearing them and looking great.

—Plaid has all of a sudden grown as a trend. Is it because of Gossip Girl? Perhaps. Here is See Jack Shop’s take on the top five plaid belts for men. They can wear a simple shirt and shorts or jeans, and elevate their outfit with a shot of color at the waist.

“THESE PRODUCTS ARE NO LONGER BEING SOLD”

Skinny belts and metallic are two trends that don’t seem to be dying anytime soon, so you might as well put them together, we say. Throw in a little reptile texture and you’ve got a conversation piece. Here, we’ve found a couple of choices—but only one is anywhere near budget enough for us to consider, and we think it looks pretty darn good. So which is which?

On the left, the “high”—- a Michael Kors belt from eLuxury.com, $275, and on the right the relatively low version from Banana Republic, $38

Fashion Advice: What to Do with a Peasant Skirt

May 21, 2006 08:58 AM | Comments (1) | Posted in forever21, shoes, fashion advice, skirts, h&m, belts, espadrilles, marshall's, mandee, deb

Dear Budget Fashionista

Last summer I stocked up on cute peasant skirts.  They’re cute and flattering, but not as in style this season.  Are there any ways I can accessorize or change my skirts to make them more on trend for this year?

A: Try pairing the skirt with a monochromatic top,  one of the seasons’ wide belts (Forever 21, H&M, Deb, Mandees, Marshall’s, etc. all have versions of this belt) and this summer’s must have shoe—the espadrilles.

You can also add a little more color (beaded necklace, embroidered cotton top, chandelier earrings) and flare for more of a Mexican/Chicano influence (think brillant Mexican artist Frida Kahlo) than the boho influence of last summer.
