
So, the recession’s starting to get to you - you’re tired of fishing for halfway decent clothes at Goodwill, avoiding the non-sales racks like the plague, and ditching your daily Starbucks just so you can afford a pair of shoes or a handbag every once in a while. Fall’s coming, and you can’t sacrifice your style any longer. Well, you don’t have to. We’ve found some great designer budget lines that will keep you looking fab.
MaxAzria/Miley Cyrus at Wal-Mart
Back to school shopping is a whole lot more affordable, thanks to Miley Cyrus. Though, if you’re parenting a teen who’s obsessed with the pop icon, you’ve probably paid your dues. The current Wal-Mart collection (which also is credited to Max Azria) includes leopard leggings and tie-dye tank tops, and nearly everything is under $10.
Eek! By Eugenia Kim (at Urban Outfitters)
Okay, so it may not be dirt cheap. But Kim’s set of hats are super cute and probably worth it. The stylish head gear goes for $28 to $48. We think the $38 grey and purple Belt Beret fits in well with the latest fall trends.
Ana Sui at Target
There’s been a lot of buzz about Ana Sui’s collab with Target, as it’s inspired by the CW’s wildly popular “Gossip Girl” series. We haven’t gotten a good look at the clothes yet, but if the TV show’s any indicators, it’s going to be fairly fab. Look out for it in September, and make sure to get to the store ASAP, because it’ll only last through October 17th.
Rachel Rachel Roy at Macy’s
Okay, so maybe you’re not going to dish out $100 for a handbag. However, for your more pristine clothing purchases, Rachel Roy’s diffusion line is a reasonably-priced option. Plus, it’s a lot of fun - spunky, youthful, and just a touch of attitude. (Prices will range from $59 all the way up to $109.) Check out this cute draped sleeve tee for $59.
What: We knew fashion was going mobile, but we were surprised to find out that many fashionistas value their iPhone/Blackberry over hand bags and other accessories. In fact, “of those surveyed [by Microsoft], 43 per cent said they would rather spend their money on a piece of technology than on a piece of clothing.”
What They Say:
“It has got to the point where technology is now an integral part of many people’s image, and this is why Microsoft is committed to producing the very best-looking, easy-to-use mobile hardware for busy people who need to look good.”
What We Say: What kind of fashion statement do you make with your tech gadgets? While we’re a bit suspicious about the origin of this survey - it was put together by Microsoft, after all - we don’t doubt that cell phones and other high-tech accessories say a lot about who you are. But do they say more than your clothes?
What: Urban Outfitters’ latest limited-edition capsule collection is finally hitting shelves. The hipster retailer—which announced plans to collaborate with hat designer Eugenia Kim and jewelry maven Annie Costello Brow just last month—is officially debuting its latest collection together with designer Emma Fletcher from the indie fashion label Lyell. Although the full line won’t be available in stores until August 15th, a number of items are already popping up online, including silk tap shorts ($58) and a v-neck sweater dress ($88).
What Teen Vogue Says:
“Ms. [Emma] Fletcher already has a loyal following, but if you’re not yet familiar with her handiwork, prepare to be charmed. Her designs are enchantingly vintage-looking but spare the wearer the strategic tailoring decisions that come with real vintage pieces…”
What We Say: She may not be as famous as some other designers who’ve collaborated with Urban Outfitters, but Emma Fletcher’s Lyell line is already hugely popular with downtown fashionistas from New York to LA. Judging from the few pieces that have debuted online, it looks like her limited-edition collection will deliver all the signature details Fletcher’s known for, but with a much cheaper price tag.
What: Urban Outfitters has gone mobile. Very few retailers offer up cell phone-friendly sites, so this took a bit of initiative. M.UrbanOutfitters.com joins the ranks m.Target.com, m.WalMart.com, and some others, but it’s an area that’s definitely underdeveloped. On the mobile site, you can build a wish list, find a store in your area, and of course shop for stuff - and even track your orders later on. This, of course, is in addition to the SMS texts that alert you to specific deals. Seems the majority, if not all, of Urban Outfitters’ inventory will be readily accessible on your phone.
What They Say:

What We say: About time, no? We’re surprised it’s taking this long for retailers to hop on board the mobile bandwagon. If you’ve got a blackberry, iPhone, you’ve got an app for just about anything - except for shopping possibly. Hey, if your favorite stores aren’t mobile, you’re kind of out of luck. Maybe that’s a good thing… hard enough to limit our spending!
This got us thinking about the future of shopping - as we shop online more, it’s just natural that we’ll start shopping on our phones, too. (Your boss won’t know what you’re up to.)
Are there any mobile shopping applications you already use and can recommend?
Sonic Youth singer and guitar/bass player Kim Gordon will debut her second fashion line to date, Mirror/Dash, on February 16th. This time, she’s collaborating with Urban Outfitters, which aims to hold on to its coming-of-age shoppers, who may not be so impressed with the young, trendy looks anymore.
Gordon sums up the thought process behind the line:“We’re actually trying to do something a little less trend oriented, a little more classic, that might appeal to someone say who used to shop at Urban [Outfitters] but wants something slightly less young looking. And we would like to appeal also to the usual Urban customer as well.” She gives most of the credit to designer Jeffrey Monteiro, though, admitting that she doesn’t do any sketching.
Oh really? What a surprise! This is the second time this week, we’ve reported on a celebrity fashion line in which the celebrity doesn’t actually design the line. Unfortunately for Gordon, she may be a little late as stores are getting rid of their celebrity lines.
What: Urban Outfitters always has a section online and in stores for discounted and marked down items, but now until Monday June 30 their sale items are discounted an additional 20 percent!
What We Say: Urban Outfitters’ regular prices are occasionally too steep for our wallets, but their sale section is consistently awesome. Especially now that we can get an additional 20 percent off that merchandise. Their style is always edgy and fashion forward and they often adapt the trends to their sometimes bohemian, hip ethos. The silhouettes of the dresses on sale are all loose and fluid, but the designs differ greatly. Many styles are for the bold and daring, while others are safer and sweet.
A controversial fashion debate revolves around high-waisted pants. Some love them, others hate. If you want to cause some sartorial conflict check out the High Waisted Skinny Pants. These pants come in three conversation-starter colors. The blue and purple are $29.99, the black is full price.
The name of the Ojo de Dios Tank translates to Eye of God—that’s a bit much, but we do like it greatly. It’s very low cut in the back, with pretty beading on the straps. Now $24.99.
