Anna Sui for Target Apparel Collection

September 19, 2009 08:25 AM | Comments (1) | Posted in target, anna sui, Target, go international

What: Finally! The Anna Sui for Target collection is here. The much-talked-about line - (infamously) inspired by the CW’s “Gossip Girl” - has hit stores, on and off line. And we’re looking forward to checking it out. Pieces include a $19.99 pair of leggings, $44.99 empire dress, and $34.99 plaid crop pants. If you want in on the action, you’ve gotta make up your mind about what to buy by October 17th - the Anna Sui/Target collection will only be around for a limited time.

What We Say: We’re bummed that most the line costs over $30, but we think it will be a refreshing and edgy addition to Target.

Anyone tried on/bought items from the collection yet? Is it worth the hype?

Jean Paul Gaultier and Target?

September 18, 2009 12:46 PM | Comments (1) | Posted in look for less, celebrity fashion, discount designer, target, Target

What: Jean Paul Gaultier - whose muses include Madonna and Lady Gaga - is apparently in talks with Target about an upcoming line. If the rumor’s true, JPG would be the latest designer to partake in Target’s series of “Designer Collaborations.” Anna Sui and Alexander McQueen are his predecessors.

What They Say:

The muse always plays a big role in Target’s Designer Collaboration series (Alexander McQueen chose the Duke Spirit and Leila Moss, Anna Sui chose the girls of Gossip Girl). So whose would Gaultier’s be? A diva, most likely. As long as the pleather is kept to a minimum and shiny stuff is included, we are onboard.

What We Say: It’s been a long time since we’ve heard such an exciting rumor, and we really, really, really hope it’s true. If JPG and Target do end up getting together, we think the outcome will be super interesting and edgy. Are you crossing your fingers for this new designer collab?

New Designer Budget Lines for Fall

fall fashion guide

So, the recession’s starting to get to you - you’re tired of fishing for halfway decent clothes at Goodwill, avoiding the non-sales racks like the plague, and ditching your daily Starbucks just so you can afford a pair of shoes or a handbag every once in a while. Fall’s coming, and you can’t sacrifice your style any longer. Well, you don’t have to. We’ve found some great designer budget lines that will keep you looking fab.

MaxAzria/Miley Cyrus at Wal-Mart
Back to school shopping is a whole lot more affordable, thanks to Miley Cyrus. Though, if you’re parenting a teen who’s obsessed with the pop icon, you’ve probably paid your dues. The current Wal-Mart collection (which also is credited to Max Azria) includes leopard leggings and tie-dye tank tops, and nearly everything is under $10.

Eek! By Eugenia Kim (at Urban Outfitters)
Okay, so it may not be dirt cheap. But Kim’s set of hats are super cute and probably worth it. The stylish head gear goes for $28 to $48. We think the $38 grey and purple Belt Beret fits in well with the latest fall trends.

Ana Sui at Target
There’s been a lot of buzz about Ana Sui’s collab with Target, as it’s inspired by the CW’s wildly popular “Gossip Girl” series. We haven’t gotten a good look at the clothes yet, but if the TV show’s any indicators, it’s going to be fairly fab. Look out for it in September, and make sure to get to the store ASAP, because it’ll only last through October 17th.

Rachel Rachel Roy at Macy’s
Okay, so maybe you’re not going to dish out $100 for a handbag. However, for your more pristine clothing purchases, Rachel Roy’s diffusion line is a reasonably-priced option. Plus, it’s a lot of fun - spunky, youthful, and just a touch of attitude. (Prices will range from $59 all the way up to $109.) Check out this cute draped sleeve tee for $59.

Rodarte Teams with Target for Holiday Line

August 6, 2009 08:16 AM | Comments (1) | Posted in discount designer, target, Target, go international, rodarte, designer for less

Rodarte Partners with Target

What: Kate and Laura Mulleavy—the sisters behind the high-end fashion brand Rodarte—are teaming up with Target as part of the company’s Go International designer collections. The 55-piece collection, which is set to include holiday dresses, jackets, and a myriad of pieces perfect for layering, is set to debut at Target stores nationwide and online on December 20th, with prices ranging from $9.99 to $79.99.

What They Say:
“What you’ll notice is an amazing eye for detail,” said Joshua Thomas, a Target spokesman. “It’s very feminine, yet very modern. The collection incorporates a rich mix of patterns and fabrications and everything from sequins and bows to faux fur. The key with Rodarte is layering.”

What We Say: Even though it seems like Target has partnered with nearly every designer on their Go International series, we’re interested in seeing how the store translates Rodarte high-end designs for the masses.

Carlos Falchi To Target

June 1, 2009 09:06 AM | Comments (6) | Posted in look for less, accessories, discount designer, target, carlos falchi

Uber expensive handbag designer and animal skin lover Carlos Falchi (we would link to his site, but the site is “down”) is partnering up with Target this fall for a line of handbags and accessories. The line, available November 1 through December 27, 2009., will probably feature tons of faux bling (think plastic python and snake print).

We wonder how these designers lines are doing for Target. Every time we head into our target, we notice there’s a lot of GO designer stuff on sale. We’re just saying…

Target and Anna Sui Collab Inspired by “Gossip Girl”

May 24, 2009 09:00 AM | Comments (0) | Posted in look for less, discount designer, target, celebrity look for less, anna sui, gossip girl

What: Anna Sui is the second designer to pair up with Target for the store’s “Designer Collaborations” (Alexander McQueen was the first). September 13, 250 Target stores will debut Anna’s collection, inspired by the CW’s “Gossip Girl,” for a limited time. Gotta check it out before October 17 or you’re out of luck.

What Anna Says: “When I was in Asia last year, all the young girls kept asking me about the different locations in New York City where the characters from ‘Gossip Girl’ live,” Sui told WWD. “I liked the idea of creating a collection reflective of each characters’ style, sensibility and unique approach to fashion. By combining the elements of art, city, spirit, punk and glamour, we created a collection that exudes New York City fashion.”

What We Say: Known for her hippie meets hipster fashions, it makes sense that Anna would use the combined mojo of “Gossip Girls” and Target for a new endeavor. We don’t normally find fashion lines that rely on pop culture references or celeb backing too appealing, but with an established designer behind this particular effort, we’re hopeful. And hey, we give props to socialite Blair Waldrof for her impeccable sense of style. Even though she’s fictional.

Tracy Feith at Target: It’s All About Target Today

tracy feith target

Designer Tracy Feith’s new collection for Target is coming out soon and based upon our first peak, it’s the most fashion forward surf line I’ve ever seen. I’m loving the seventies vibe (especially the strapless, Flowerpower/Tiki dress) and the strong colors. Plus, there is not a flip-flop to be seen (hallelujah!).

From the press release: Tracy Feith for Target collection offers flowing frocks and easy silhouettes that are utterly chic for the summer season, from $14.99 to $139.99. Feith uses original, bohemian-inspired prints and a rainbow of colors to accentuate unique yet sophisticated women, like that of fan Michelle Obama.  The collection is filled with mix-and-match printed swim separates and vintage beach-inspired basics which accentuate Feith’s barefoot-luxury aesthetic.  Flower power and crazy daisy prints are reminiscent of 70s surf life, highlighted by bark cloth and linen textures and cropped cut jackets in canvas and genuine leather.

Total Side Note: While I love both Target and Mrs. O like I love my Snuggie or cupcakes from Crumbs Bakery, can we can please stop tying every fashion moment to our first lady? Yeah, she has great style, but Feith’s clothing are stylish and forward enough to stand on their own.

Anna Sheffield

High end Accessories Designer Anna Sheffield is partnering up with Target for a limited collection this fall. This collection is the fifth jewelry launch in a series of limited-time-only accessories designers at Target.  The Anna Sheffield for Target collection will be available at Target stores nationwide and on Target.com August 30 through December 30, 2009.

We’re hoping she does a cheaper version of this quartz and diamond ring, cause there’s nothing we like more than bling without the bucks.

Plus-Size Styles Coming to Target

March 24, 2009 07:00 AM | Comments (8) | Posted in target, plus size fashion, plus size, Target

What: Target’s hopping on board the latest trend, stylish clothing for plus-size gals, with a new line from LA-based Pure Energy. We’re not sure why it’s taken so long for designers and retailers to appeal to the majority of female shoppers out there - most of us aren’t pencil thin - but Target’s new line is a sign of things to come for sure. This April, bigger women can look forward to Pure Energy tops, bottoms, dresses, and denim, designed just for them, at Target stores (and online). These items will be cheap, too, ranging from $16.99 to $29.99.

What They Say:

“The Pure Energy collection features brightly colored, dip-dye and burnout tank tops, flowing floral skirts and maxi-style dresses, sophisticated nightlife pieces and a variety of in-style denim including skirts, capris and jeans.”

What We Say: We think this step makes a lot of sense for Target; plus-size women care just as much about style as petite women and this fact has been neglected by the retail industry for years. However, we’re not 100% sold on the new line, which includes tops with very thin, nearly see-through material, and white white shorts. We don’t guess that will be very flattering, but once the line launches later this spring and we can try it on in the dressing room, we’ll have a better idea.

The Budget Fashionista’s Weekly Retail Report for March 15

March 17, 2009 07:00 AM | Comments (0) | Posted in target, walmart, weekly retail report, store closings

Store Closings

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but every time the retail report rolls around, we’ve gotta be just that. Here goes.

Slowly but surely, retail sales are increasing, but even though February wasn’t hit as bad as Wall Street expected, the news is still all bad. Just not as bad as everyone predicted. Men’s Wearhouse is one shining example of this; although its profits went down, they didn’t go quite as far down as anticipated.

Good News First
Wal-Mart is kicking butt and bragging about it, too, with this statement from the Vice Chairman: “Our customers have come to trust our ‘Save Money Live Better’ promise, and we exceeded our own expectations for the period.” Hot Topic also seems to be getting along without too many hangups.

Not Doing So Hot
PacSun reported major losses in Q4.
L.L. Bean is prepping employees for a wave of layoffs in 2009, but hopes some of their more senior staff members will voluntarily retire and make it easier for everyone.
American Eagle didn’t do too well in Q4.
Neiman Marcus gets the prize, though, with a whopping $509 million loss.

Up for Sale
Teen retailer Charlotte Russe is putting itself on the sales rack - who will buy it and for how much? Time will tell.
Meanwhile, American Apparel has successfully sold some of itself to Lion Capital.

Life After Bankruptcy
Well, we’ve got some new Chapter 11 team members - Robins Bros Jewelry Chain and an Icelandic investor in UK retail, Baugur. (The recession’s everywhere, folks, not just the US.) What will happen to them now?

Let’s just take a look at what’s going on with retailers that filed Chapter 11 a while back. Gottschalks department store chain will auction off its assets by March 30th. S&K Menswear has begun 30 store closing sales, with markdowns of 30 to 50%. And Hartmax Corp’s Hickey Freeman store in NY is shutting down for good.

The Outlook
JCrew, Marc Jacobs, and of course, Wal-Mart are all planning to expand in 2009.

Aeropostatle will be launching a kids chain this summer and eBay will be giving PayPal and some of its other ecommerce platforms a little more focus in the coming year.

Target, on the other hand, isn’t so daring. It’ll open less stores than it originally intended to..

Mossimo Spring 2009 Collection for Target Offers Affordability, Plus Sizes, and California Chic

March 14, 2009 07:00 AM | Comments (4) | Posted in target, plus size fashion, spring 2009 fashion, mossimo, Target, plus size budget fashion

Overview: For Spring 2009, Target’s banking again on Mossimo Giannulli’s trademark “fresh” and “no-fuss” style that we’ve all come to expect from the Mossimo line.  Meant to be mixed and matched, easily layered and worn with a casual but feminine air, the 2009 beachwear inspired line has great potential at first glance. Tops are reminiscent of a 60’s inspired glamor (think Mad Men, bold sailor stripes, cardigans, flutter sleeves and fun prints).  Mossimo’s accessories are the most fashion forward in the line;  embracing many of the most popular trends of the last year-gladiator sandals, wide waist belts, bright jewel tones and big beads.

The most enthusiastic designs are the dresses; soft colors such as cobalt blue, bright coral and sunshine yellow, casual knee-length hems, delicate looking fabrics and adorable prints.  Mossimo definitely wants us to ooh-and-ahh about the possibility of layering these pieces with belts, sweaters and jewelry, and the transition from beachy days to breezy nights (and even to work.)

New Plus Size Line:
Target recently added the Mossimo for Target Plus Sizes.  (See: Is Plus Size In?No hard news yet on whether this line is simply a plus-size version of the regular line, or something different altogether. Target’s dropped hints that the line, in size 1X through 3X, will include “basic knit tops” that are “revamped with draping, ruching or braided trim,” and “dolman- and flutter-sleeve blouses” which suggests that these pieces are different from the rest of the Spring 2009 women’s products (*sigh*).

The Warning Label: The popular flowy, tiered tops don’t necessarily go with the Mossimo loose bermuda shorts and chunky wedge heels.  Be careful when pairing loose clothing; considering breaking up the silhouette with some fitted straight leg jeans, narrow gladiator heels or sandals with thin straps.

And, of course, check out the Mossimo for Target line in person, first.   Spring is the perfect time to market bold, bright new colors that we all want for our closets.  But, Spring is also the time for mass produced cheap (aka “affordable”) lightweight fabrics that don’t cost a lot to make. That being said, we think Mossimo is perfect for on trend items at a price that will allow you to maximize your cost per wear (See: Fashion Advice: The Cost Per Wear Ratio).

The Budget Fashionista’s Weekly Retail Closing Report, March 9

March 9, 2009 05:00 PM | Comments (4) | Posted in target, gap, weekly retail report, footlocker

Store Closings

So, we’re gonna have to play Captain Obvious this week, because the retail industry had no surprises for us (or Wall Street).

As you might expect, shoppers are looking for the highest markdowns and avoiding luxury outlets altogether. As a result, retailers like Saks and Victoria’s Secret are doing exponentially worse month to month, while stores that sell $15 handbags instead of $1000 handbags are still managing to hang on. (Target’s even opening some stores in Hawaii, while Gap hopes to get over this bad economy by going overseas.) But everyone’s struggling - just to different degrees. Liz Claiborne, Urban Outfitters, Macys (duh), Dillards (duh), and Ann Taylor are this week’s notable strugglers. In order to get folks into your stores, you gotta slash your prices, and that ultimately means you’re gonna make less of a profit. And so the circle of life continues.

Some exceptions to the economy’s new rules include Foot Locker, Adidas, Wet Seal, American Outfitters, The Buckle, Hot Topic, and above all, Wal-Mart, who are exceeding investors’ expectations. Are they doing awesome? Well, no. But they are doing a lot better than the rest. This is hopefully a sign that the economy is stabilizing itself and while it may not improve any time soon, it just might stop getting worse.

The Budget Fashionista’s Weekly Retail Closing Report for March 3

March 6, 2009 07:00 AM | Comments (3) | Posted in nordstrom, target, weekly retail report, neiman marcus

Store Closings

Could the news get any worse? Very much so. Retailers keep struggling, stores keep closing, and stuff keeps getting liquidated. The Q4 results are in… here are the losers, and, well, the losers.

Fourth Quarter Blues
Nordstrom and Saks, two of the more upscale retailers out there, aren’t doing too well, and in fact - “given the uncertain economy, [Nordstrom] no longer will provide a quarterly earnings outlook.” Eeks. So much for optimistic thinking.

Macy’s, Target, and Kohl’s also reported awful fourth quarters. Gap joined the sad chorus, too, but was quick to point out that it has still managed to outperform competitors.

Slimming Up
Neiman Marcus is lightening its load, firing a bunch of folks (450 to be exact). Valentino is also letting go of some employees. J.Crew’s taking even more drastic measures, though, slashing 95 jobs, suspending its 401K program, and even getting rid of raises that are merit-based. Jeez!

Stores Closing
Aeropostatle is closing all 11 Jimmy’Z stores.
Zales is shutting down 115 stores.
Iridesse - a pearl jewelry chain by Tiffany and Co - is over. All 16 stores will be closed.

Could Barneys be on the same path? Probably not, but it did put a stop to its spring orders, for the time being.

Finally, the economy is hammering the final nail in the Fortunoff coffin. Liquidation is beginning.

In the midst of all this doom and gloom, Christian Audigier is rubbing the opening of his new Ed Hardy store in everyone’s face, celebrating it with champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and NFL players. A little insensitive, don’t you think?
