Yea or Nay: Ugg Rainboots?
To Ugg or not to Ugg: The greatest question facing our country in the new millennium.
You know, I’ve been on the fence about Ugg boots for a while now. On one hand, they’re comfy, easy to wear, and warm. On the other hand, they’re crazy expensive and look like a cross between moonboots and house slippers.
Now the folks at Uggs just released a line of hideous rainboots with prices… wait for this…. in the $150-$230 price range. Do the folks at Ugg know we’re in a recession? Yes, the boots are lined in short-haired sheepskin, which makes them comfy and warm, but couldn’t you just buy a pair of sheep skin liners at your local Menards or Fleet Farm (you midwesterns know exactly what I am talking about) and put them in a pair of $19.99 rainboots from Target?

The Lowdown: While we wouldn’t bother to drop a lot of cash on a pair of, say, silver platform salsa sandals (for the record, we’d get ours via Patricia Field at Payless), we do see the logic in spending a little more on a footwear wardrobe staple like a great pair of boots. How to Wear Knit Cuff Boots
Dear Budget Fashionista:
My sweet hubby recently went online and purchased a really cute pair of boots for me. Only one problem though, I don’t know how to wear them. They are a high-heeled brown leather pair that has a fold down knit-cuff. Much more stylized than I am used to. I was online today attempting to find something to go with, but not sure what I should be looking for. Skirt, pants, jeans? And advice on where to shop would be excellent.
Answer: First, give your husband a kiss (if you haven’t already), for trying his hand at fashion. You’ve gotta to encourage them (men) when they do something good. Second, the best way to wear the boots is with pair of dark skinny leg jeans (cause you don’t want it to look like you’re wearing pantaloons), tucking the jeans into the boots. Why should you do this? Well, if you try to wear a pair of pants over the boots it will create a lump around your knee, which isn’t cute and, unless you wear a very short skirt (3 inches above the knee), the knit cuff of the boot and the hem of the skirt will be around the same area, making your knees look quite bulky. Plus the whole point of the boot is the knit cuff, so you need to be able to show it off.

What We Say: Last year, the bootine was THE shoe for fall. Well, this year isn’t very original, but once again the bootine (or bootie, or ankle boot, or whatever you wish to call it) is super hot again. Still perplexed on how to wear it? Don’t be, because it’s more versatile than you think—pair them with a pencil skirt and button down blouse; a sweater dress; or just denim or dress trousers, like you would any other boot. There are plenty of budget versions to be had (and if you have a pair from last year, even better!), but we’ve selected a handful that we figure would do nicely to take us all the way through the winter (assuming we waterproof properly).

Reader Advice: Best Exfoliator on a Budget
Summer can mean showing off just a bit more skin, and that means keeping that skin in glowing good shape is especially important (that sassy little sundress can’t compete with dull ashy skin—trust us). We budget fashionistas either can’t, or won’t, pay big bucks for high-end exfoliators or an all-out spa treatment on a regular basis, so we’re on the lookout for great exfoliators (either for the face or all over) that won’t clean out our discretionary budget. Of course, Kathryn digs this easy from-the-kitchen Oatmeal Facial Scrub recipe, which couldn’t be more cost effective, really. And we’re kind of fond of Boots Meditteranean products, like this Almond, Pistachio, and Olive Body Scrub ($9.99 for 13.5 oz at CVS.com). But we want to know—what budget-friendly exfoliator do you swear by to keep that summer glow glowing?

New Beauty Product Line: Boots at Target
Boots, the UK based drug store chain, is the ultimate drug store, sort of like CVS, Sephora, Target, and Whole Foods all mixed into one brand. The chain has been around for like forever (over 100 years) in Britain, yet it has taken until this year for the products to make a big push stateside. Of course…there’s only one American store smart enough to partner up with the beloved brand here in the US. That store, of course, is Target.
Boots at Target will hit stores starting this March and I can tell you it will revolutionize your drugstore beauty experience. The brand is taking over a whole aisle and some stores will even have black clad beauty advisors to help you with your choices (cause would you trust someone in a red polo and khakis to give you beauty advice? I think not..). Department store beauty lines like Origins, Clinique, etc should be very afraid because the Boots line of beauty products are not only high quality, but cost about half the price of these lines. I mean, do you REALLY, need to spend $35 on salt scrub that costs about $.50 to make?
But….
I’m not clicking my heels too high for the brand cause for some strange reason NONE of their make-up colors will work for women of color. I’m not only talking about my Black sisters, but my Indian sisters, my Italian sisters, my Latino Sisters, even my Anglo sisters with a nice summer tan, won’t be able to find a make-up color that works for them. I even asked the V.P of American Stuff (I can’t remember his exact title), “where’s the products for the sistas” and he sort of brushed me off with “it’s in development” (retail speak for “Ummm we didn’t think about you people”). I then asked him.. “has he ever been to a Target at 1pm on a Saturday? Pretty much every ethnic group you can imagine is there buying those addictive chocolates.” Ahhh… this is just so frustrating, cause I really like their products.
Cause they are British and they probably do not get BET or Univision, I will give them one year to come up with some colors for us colored girls. Until then here’s the BOOTS products you should try when the line hits Target:
- Mediterranean Olive Wheatgerm and Honey Body Butter ($9.99 for one tub). It’s a thick, rich cream, enriched with wheatgerm oil and honey that knocked the ash right off my skin. Plus it smells like pure heaven. Everyone who has ever tried this body butter falls in love with it.
- Feel the Difference Skin Brightening Beauty Plan (19.99, arrives in stores on 3/11). The Beauty Plan comprises3oz bottles filled with a liquid combination of vitamins, minerals, and other stuff good for your skin. I tried the regimen and I did see a slight difference in my skin color. On the bad side- the solution tasted a bit like the kiddie medicine, Pedolyte. The medicine taste of the solution is a small price to pay for glowing skin
- No7 4 in 1 Quick Thinking Face Wipes ($6.99, arrives ins tores 3/11). I’m lazy, so I love wipes like these that cleanse and moisturize at the same time. Plus it smells is wonderful.
- Feel the Difference Five Day Plan Dietary Supplement ($19.99, arrives in stores 3/11). The purpose of this detox plan is to cleanse your system of all the impurities, dirt, glunk, and other stuff that hinder our internal and external health. Here’s how it works: you empty five tubes of this thick strawberry stuff into a liter of water (which you should be drinking) and shake or stir to mix. You drink this solution every day for a five day period. I wasn’t feelin’ the yucky taste of the strawberry stuff, but at the end of the five day period, I did feel pretty good.
Shoe Boots: Fall 2006 Fashion Preview
The hot new boot this season is actually a shoe. Everyone from Vogue to Topshop are featuring shoe boots as the new boots for fall. Think round toe, black boots, circa late 19th century, made of satin, with thick and/or lacey shoe laces. You won’t see me rocking a pair—they make chunky legs look chunkier—but I do think that budget fashionistas who are a bit trendier or socialite in their style would be able to carry off the look without a hitch.
How You’ll Wear Them:
- With a tailored, 1940’s style suit and pair of black (or gray) leggings
- to add a bit of femininity to a pair of tailored menswear pants
- with a ultra mini and pair of bright colored tights
