What: VMA show stealer Beyonce Knowles had planned to launch a fragrance called Fierce in 2010. However, Abercrombie & Fitch is trying to steal her thunder. The retailer’s suing the pop star because it already has a “signature scent” called Fierce.
What They Say:
In a federal lawsuit filed on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, Abercrombie claims a fragrance under the singer’s “Sasha Fierce” label “poses a likelihood of confusion” with the retailer’s own “Fierce” brand.
What We Say: We think this is probably just a way for A&F to bring attention to its $40 per oz perfume. Probably gonna be good advertising all around. But in the end - we really couldn’t care less if another celebrity is able to launch a fragrance or not.
Thoughts?
What: Is there anything Beyonce can’t do? Just a month after she launched a junior’s collection, Beyonce and her mom Tina are announcing plans to expand their House of Deréon clothing line as well. The ladies say they are planning to debut the collection of silk jumpsuits, daytime dresses and knitwear at U.S. department stores in time for spring with wholesale prices ranging from $70 to $100.
What Tina Knowles Says:
“Beyoncé and I have had several occasions where we have meetings all day and don’t have time to run and change before dinner,” says Tina. “This is a perfect collection to wear from the office to dinner because each piece can easily be dressed up or down.”
What We Say: She hasn’t had the greatest luck selling her House of Deréon line in the past, so it’s not entirely clear why Beyonce would want to continue the madness by adding on to the collection. Nonetheless, we’re looking forward to seeing what more of the pieces actually look like, and judging for ourselves whether anyone would actually wear them to the office or dinner.
What: Beyoncé and her mom Tina Knowles are launching a new junior clothing line just in time for the back-to-school season. The new collection, dubbed Sasha Fierce for Deréon, is set to include sportswear, outerwear, handbags, footwear, eyewear, lingerie and jewelry. It’ll be sold at department stores such as Macy’s and Dillard’s and specialty stores including Jimmy Jazz and Against All Odds, with wholesale prices ranging from $25 to $75.
What Tina Knowles Says:
“When the tour started, we noticed the definite style of it,” Tina [Knowles] explained. “Thierry Mugler designed the clothes for the tour, but we really wanted to celebrate the style and interpret that into a collection.”
What We Say: Uhhh…. Seriously? The only place we see the House of Dereon collection is on the sales rack of our local Macys and Marshalls. Are we the only ones who think Beyonce’s
“alter ego” is kinda of, well, corny? She’s an awesome performer, no doubt, but we think singing is her forte, NOT designing clothing.

As a style diva, Beyonce is known for her over-the-top moments both on the red carpet and on stage—while she pulls it off like no one else, the rest of us would be hard-pressed to want, much less be able, to wear shiny gold hot pants on any given day.
Fortunately, as a style icon, Beyonce manages to give even jeans and a t-shirt a little extra diva-liciousness. Did we just make that word up? Regardless, you can get it too, by putting together these easy pieces:

Short bomber jacket from Chadwick’s on sale now, $59.00

Braided knit hat, Forever 21, $8.80

White scoop neck long-sleeve tee, Target, $8.99

Long and Lean jeans, from Gap, on sale now, $48.

It’s hard to tell just what’s happening with the bag, but just to get a little of that gold vibe, we picked this Genna de Rossi from JC Penney, on sale now for $34.99

Yesterday, I spent the day at the Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall near the Newark airport in Elizabeth, NJ—an outlet mall that puts the “g” in ghetto (before you leave angry comments, visit the outlet mall. The kiosks sell gold fronts (aka teeth) that would make Flavor Flav proud and there’s a shop in the mall that sells rims).
Despite the quality of 90% of the stores, you can actually find some pretty solid deals on designers that your favorite rap stars have yet to discover, like the Vivienne Westwood khaki canvas jacket with black stripes that I found on the clearance rack at Marshalls (full disclosure: Marshalls is sponsoring my book tour) for $16.00. At the same Marshalls, I found a House of Deron, Beyonce and her mama’s new clothing line, cropped cream brocade jacket for $29.99 (not on sale). The jacket was constructed nicely, but the wrists of the jacket were lined with what looked like fur from a dead cat.
Dead animals and 20 inch spinners aside, the mall is a great diversion if you have sometime to kill before a flight or need a little apparel therapy before hitting IKEA (historical note: The Elizabeth IKEA was one of the first IKEA in North America, Plymouth Meeting, PA was the first). Plus it’s a bit closer than Woodbury.
