Fashion Trend: Big Shoulders?
July 15, 2008 09:00 PM

Perhaps we should blame the designers -- even our beloved Marc Jacobs showed big shoulders on the runway for Fall 08. Maybe we can blame Sex and The City’s Samanatha for all those big-shouldered power suits she donned in the SATC movie this summer. Or possibly we should just blame the 80s which are, let’s face it, the root of much fashion evil. Whoever you blame, it appears we have an unwelcome fashion trend to contend with—the big shoulder, which is already making its way into the mainstream fashion consciousness via celeb style (like this Jasmine Di Milo dress on the usually-classic Anne Hathaway, which looks to us like a cut-off version of our sister’s prom dress from 1986).

The one redeeming quality of a broad shoulder? It can help balance out the body, particularly if you have a pear-shaped figure. So a strong (structured) shoulder, depending on the garment (we prefer it in a jacket, like this Alex Marie jacket from Dillard’s) and the wearer, we can live with. A pointy-shouldered cocktail gown? Um, Dynasty went off the air for a reason.

So, wise TBF readers, what do you think? Is the return of the big shoulder a fashion yea or a hells-to-the-nay? Comment below!

“An unwelcome trend”?  I think not!  You can take off 10 lbs. in 10 seconds by simply inserting a pair of shoulder pads!  I say Yea!
