There’s something about this fall’s new “it” jeans, the skinny jeans, that makes me feel uncomfortable. Maybe it’s the fact that the jeans are a “camel-toe” incident waiting to happen. Or the fact that I know this style is going to be as abused as its lowrise sister.
Whatever the case maybe, the skinny pant is here and there is nothing I can do about it. And because I love you and only want what’s best for you, here is the answer to some of your skinny jean questions:
Where can you find these jeans?
Old Navy. Baby Phat. Paper Denim Cloth. Everybody’s got their own version of the jeans. There’s no where to run. You can’t hide from them.
How much do they cost?
Under $30 at Old Navy, Forever 21, and H&M. $100+ for designer versions from Seven, Antik, and gang. $300+ from the crack heads at Rock and Republic.
Who should buy the jeans?
For the most part, Skinny jeans are for skinny people. Even if you have skinny legs but are a bit bigger at in the torso area, you should walk away from the rack- you don’t want to look like Humpty-Dumpty.
That being said . . .There is one way in which you can wear the jeans and that is to wear them like you would this season’s other big trend—the black legging—by layering long tunics, your summer jersey dresses, or long grandpa sweaters that end past your thighs over the jeans. Make sure to wear a belt with these tops, so they don’t look bulky and a pair of heels to a add a bit of height. Remember—the taller you are, the thinner you look.
What about plus size?
Again, the only people who can wear the skinny jeans are skinny people, which is why you won’t see me in a pair of the jeans. Remember not every trend can be or should be worn by everyone. Regardless of what they put on the racks. Think of your body as a scale- a wide top, should be balanced with a wide bottom, a thin top should be balanced with a thin bottom and vice versa.
What kind of shoes should be worn with the skinny leg jeans?
The best shoes to wear with skinny jeans are ballerina flats (which you can find at stores like Steve Madden,Target, Zappos) or heeled (thin or stillettos look best) pumps (which can find pretty much everywhere shoes are sold or check out Zappos.com).

You won’t see me in skinny jeans, either. I’ll stick with my classic dark boot cuts, thanks.

I ventured into Express the other day. I wanted to prove to that nagging inside that the skinny jean was not for me, so I grabbed a pair and tried them on. Much to my surprise, they actually looked great. I’ve never been so pleased with something that I was skeptical about. I plan to buy an extra long pair so that I can “scrunch” the bottoms over stilettos.

I tried on a pair of white (!) skinny jeans the other day and all I could think was “wow, I really I picked the right year to lose a little weight.” I may look horrible in tunic tops, baby dolls and all the other currently trendy tops (I’m busty with narrow hips so they make me look like I’m 6 months along), but skinny jeans, I can do!

I’m a big fan of J Brand’s skinny jeans~ not the ones with the ultra drainpipe 10” opening but the orignal 14” cigarette style~ they are comfy and skinny without looking like a sad 80’s revival and snug without being cameltoe tight and they actually fit true to size??!!!
Imagine my surprise actually buying jeans that don’t stretch out after one or two wears

If you can’t/won’t do the skinny - go for a straight. Your still get that oh-so-current slim silhouette without exhibiting any less than flattering assets. Check out the label! At least 1% spandex will help your jeans from becoming a baggy mess in unpleasant locations (seat and knees) and for stuffing into boots.

I’m surprised this blog has been posted now, is this a UK thing, as we (in the UK) have been donning skinny jeans for a while now. Only wear them if you’re skinny! Posh Spice is a big fashion icon here and she recently said skinny jeans are not good with flat shoes, but I disagree, as i’ve put in my blog.

Styles always seem to come back, no matter how bad they are - like skinny jeans. I just hope that they don’t bring back the jeans with the waistline just under your breasts - but they will - it’s inevitable.

You’re right, the skinny jean is VERY british and it’s a VERy new (at least to the mainstream folks) trend.... I’m telling you it’s like someone stole Vivienne Westwood’s brain and posted it on myspace. Maybe once we get Topshop, us American fashionistas won’t be so far behind.

Well.. it always takesa while for things to trickle across the pond and it makes sense from a political prespective cause lots of American youth feel disenfranchised and a bit hopeless like during the punk movement of the early 70s (and of course late 70s/80s in the US).

Skinny jeans are not very flattering. You can’t wear them extra long, so they won’t make your legs look any longer. They might even make your legs look shorter, if they’re cropped. I agree: skinny jeans are for skinny people. (Very skinny!) For the sake of looking fab, stick with flares! CATWOMAN HAS SPOKEN!

Gap has some amazing jeans that are skinny-ish. Some of them are similar to those loveable but discontinued “Slim fit” ones. I just bought a pair from Gap and they are my new favorite.

i actually do like the skinny jean, its different...people say its very “emo” i have to disagree..now the problem is that whole self perception thing...im a size 5/7 or 28/29..am i not skinny enough for the skinny jeans? i dont know..anyone have idea??

I’ve seen tons of girls in very skintight, straight-leg pants at shows and whatnot for a very long time. I’m surprised at how quickly the rest of America has come around to deeming them as the ‘next big trend.’ You used to have to either buy the very pricey jeans from Miss Sixty or Rock & Republic or tailor your own; you could never find any pants that weren’t ridiculously baggy or flared (gross) at places like the mall. Now they sell them everywhere from Forever 21 to Old Navy. I wonder how long this will last.

I bought a really cute pair of skinny jeans for about $20 at wet seal the other day. they look really good, but im a really thin girl-(about 100 lbs at 5’6") im not sure if it does this for all people, but my sister hates them because she says they make me look skinnier than i am! im not sure if wet seal is too young for people here to shop at but i hope that helps!

A lot of things that are suddenly a *NEW TREND* in the mainstream have been around for the last year or two on the emo/scene front… leggings with skirts/tunics, skinny jeans with tunics or long shirts… It’s bizarre to walk around and feel like everyone should be heading to one big Fueled By Ramen showcase. But then again, a lot of emo/scene bands are becoming very popular now. Fall Out Boy, From First To Last, The Academy Is… and Panic! At The Disco are all emo/scene bands that have been signed to major labels in the last year or two. And now Sienna Miller prances around like she’s headed to see The Hush Sound. Crazy…

It makes me laugh when someone says, “the newest trend” because really? It is just a recycled trend. I wore skinny jeans back in the day, just as I wore leggings, long shirts, and so on and so on. I guess I am dating myself.
Will jelly shoes be coming back? Because those were my favorites. lol.
No sarcasm pointed at you Miss TBF (because I heart you), I just think it’s funny to hear all of these kids in my neighborhood talking about the coolest “new” styles, that just make me regret giving away my clothes in 1986 to the Salvation Army.

Ha, I’m wearing GAP “Slim Fit” jeans at this very moment...I bought them in December 2004 and they’re starting to fall apart b/c let’s face it, GAP jeans aren’t exactly the highest quality brand.
Too bad they began to fall apart just as soon as skinny jeans came back in style...they’re slim but not “skinny,” so I’m wearing them until I lose enough weight to fit into true skinnies. They sure are comfy though.

Actually,
I too am going my second go-round with the skinny jeans. I wore em....skin tight, and highwaisted in the 80’s...when I was 13 or 14 years old. And I wore leggings.
The skinny leg jean, is not as “new” a trend as some of people like to admit to. Firstly, ROCKERS have always kept a pair of peg legs, or drainpipes in their wardrobes (I bought a pair of Trash and Vaudeville peg legs in 1988 in the store on St. Marks Place in NYC, where I live and have lived for 13 years, and they are still in my wardrobe, and instead of spending ridiculous money for a pair now, I just rock these....and they are SUPER SLIM), so I’ve been wearing these jeans on and off for the better part of 8 years. That said, as a “fashion statement” they started creeping back in slowly in and around 2004.
Here’s another tip that the “fashion” industry would like you to think....THAT ONLY SKINNY MINNIES CAN WEAR EM. It’s not true...but what is true, is that if you buy the wrong fit, wrong ankle length, wrong color and wrong waist on them...you’ll look awful. And it’s also true, that this is a style that does look better on skinny legs. That said, if worn correctly, they can make a curvier girl look longer and leaner. Here’s what I’d suggest.
Firstly, I’m a size 14. I have about 5 pairs of skinny jeans, in addition to my favorite pair, the Trash and Vaudeville ones I NEVER GOT RID OF. Those are my faves, cause the leg comes to the ankle, hugs tight, and is not only tapered there, it’s tapered into the knee crease, and has a waist that isn’t too low, or too high, but instead is right over the belly button, which gives support and hold. You want the length of the leg to come to the ankle or longer, and you want to wear these with shoes that either focus attention to the toe (hence the ballet slipper, or my fave....wedge flats from the 80’s....), or platforms or wedges. Stillettos are great too, even if no one is rockin’ them now.
So when this style came back, I decided to change gears and not go for the ridiculous fashion jeans (save expensive jeans for a tailored look, my “designer jeans” are bootcut, or flared leg....if you’re going to spend money for all the hoopla, spend it on quality denim with good tailoring.....jeans that when you buy them, you’ll ALWAYS WEAR THEM), and I went back to my rocker roots, and headed to Trash and Vaudeville again to see what they had.
I started wearing skinny jeans again in 2004. Miss Sixty came out with the J Lot and no one bought them much when they came out. I saw them creeping up again here in NYC (aside from on the rock guys), and then I took a trip to London that fall, and Topshop Baxters were everywhere. I fortunately, packed the Trash and Vaudeville jeans with me, and didn’t feel at all out of place next to the amazingly tall, gorgeous fashionista London Gals and more than a few of them asked me where I got mine....
Here are some things to consider, if this is a look you want to rock.
1) Buy them LOOOOONG
2) If they don’t taper the way you like, get a slim or straight type and take them to the tailor for a custom tapering. And don’t “taper” so much as drainpipe them. You don’t want MOM jeans
3) Make sure they have a good deal of stretch to them, but not too much. And don’t buy denim that’s thin...get thick denim to straighten out your lumps and bumps
4) Spending over $100.00 on a pair of these is STUPIDITY. This is a TREND, don’t spend your big bucks on trends. Besides, the rocker jeans, which are cheaper are better anyway and will last longer.
5) The MENS skinny jeans can be a good choice in some instances, if you’re bigger than most and then get them tailored for you.
Here are my favorite brands, curvy girls...take note.....
CHEAP MONDAY- These are a brand from Sweden, another place where skinny jeans have been in style forever. These are HOT, and they are a unisex label for the most part. I have two pairs of these in a 34 inch waist. They have great variety. A pair will run you $65.00. The Swedes also make the Kate Moss favorites, Acne, which are a lot more money...and not better in my opinion.
TRIPP- A rocker fave....Tripp have made peg legs FOREVER.
DOGPILE- The Joey Ramone peg legs have been onsale forever, they are REALLY SUPERTIGHT, I have a gals pair, but I’d recommend going with a guys smaller pair
LEVIS- They make awesome skinny jeans. The Capital E’s are expensive and I like the 503’s better.
LIPSERVICE/KILL CITY- They make em awesome.

i’m tempted to do the skinny jean thing because i’m sooo sick of the wide leg jeans because they always cover up my great shoes!!! But in all honestly, i want a pair of jeans that i can wear with anything and for me that will always be the bootcut. not too wide and not too narrow, just perfect.

i haveee a pair of many skinny jeans and they rock big time! I used to wear flares but i prefer skinny jeans much to my delight. I am a 19 yr old male btw. I used to wear flares but im not keen on them at the moment. Baggy jeans have been around for a long time and so it’s good to see this skinny jean trend taking off again. People get so worked up/shocked about this skinny jean trend because baggy jeans were around for ages and that’s the reason why. People forget about change and they’re not uses to it but i say bring it on! It’s about time we had a change. Skinny/drainpipe jeans definately look good on the more skinnier/slimmer people and yes this 80’s revival fashion trend is still going! It rules yeaaaaa!! Music is also making an influence on this trend. Because of the new wave/80’s punk revival in music which has gone mainstream (big time in the UK) you see many music artists wearing skinny jeans and where music goes fashion follows. Personaly I like it alot =]

Skinny jeans have been cool for sevral years already! I like Levis, they are cheap & flattering; I’ve gotten some for $10 to $30 at an outlet!
It creates a much different silhouette from the boot cut, but I welcomed it cuz I was sooo bored with the bootcut. These look really cute if you are thin. If you tend to carry some weight in the middle but still have skinny legs then these will give you that chicken/duck look. Maybe stick with a straight leg which will flatter you by keeping a straight line from your middle down. Express makes ones that arent as skintight and have less of a narrow ankle if the drainpipe is too much for you. Wait for them to go on sale; they always do at Express!
Skinny jeans look best with flats, pointy toe heels, and wedges. Very convenient to wear with boots!
Also: wear them with a lower rise still or they will look like mom jeans!!! I checked out Cheap Monday’s Eiffel Tower jeans which have a scary, REALLY HIGH waist which give you a pancake butt. Yuck!
The low-rise skinny jeans make your butt look cute!

I would just like to say that i am a 16 year old girl who has been wearing skinny jeans since 2003. back then, people were like, “oh how DORKY’- and now that supre (i’m aussie) and JayJays and Just Jeans are selling them, everyone is wearing them. And they are massacaring the look. I mean, yeah Hush sound’s greta wear’s pinafores over jeans and leggings, but what is with the ballet flats and singlets? WEAR THEM WITH SNEAKERS and BAND T-SHIRTS for pete’s sake. What do you think Chuck’s and volley’s were made for? hmm? what about VANS or old school reeboks?
if you are going to wear them, wear them right. Because remember, you are stealing the look of us emo/indie people. It is ruining our worlds. we become conformists. Please, please stop.
