Fine Living recently had a short, interesting segment on the role of simplicity in interior design that can be directly applied to personal style as well. The segment detailed how nature likes simplicity. Many of the aesthetically pleasing items in nature, like flowers and trees, embody only what is necessary. Colors, lines, and shapes are limited to no more than two or three variations.
Wearing only what is necessary to visually hold interest is good personal style advice. When dressing, choose only one focal point—a great pair of earrings, necklace, hat, etc. Make sure that focal point highlights your best personal feature (so if you don’t like your waist—skip the wide red belt). Watch out for colors, too. In nature, aesthetically pleasing items rarely embody more than 3 colors and most of the time the colors involved are shades of the same color.
