Here’s Five Quick Tips for Surviving Black Friday: The Day Shoppers Go Crazy

1. Determine Your Budget BEFORE You Head Out. Develop a budget the night before and stick to it.

2. Write A Shopping List. Write down a detailed shopping list, listing all the people you need to shop for, their gift and the maximum you’re willing to pay for their gift.

3. Do Your Research. Look through holiday circulars and check sites like Black Friday Ads for what each store is offering. Also make sure to check if the store is selling the same item (for the same price) online. You may be able to avoid the long lines.

4. Bring Supplies. Bring a bottle of water and power bars/snack packs. Bring a foldable luggage cart if you plan on purchase a large amount of items. Dress in layers, so you can add and substract clothing based on the stores tempature.

5. Shop Alone. I find it easier to focus, when power shopping, if I shop alone. There’s an exception to this rule. Boyfriends/Husbands/Partners are great for carrying bags and watching purses.

Amen, to the budget!  I have to hide my credit card deep in my purse so that it doesn’t slip into the cashier’s hand without me thinking twice about the B word—budget!

I don’t shop Black Friday, but I think these are good points for all holiday shopping. I find when I don’t have a list, I buy all kinds of stuff that nobody really wants or needs. I would add one point: give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. It will help you be more calm and patient. And smile--you can fake it till you feel it, and the salespeople will appreciate a kind face. They are working hard and doing the best they can under very stressful conditions.
