Somethings are More Important than Consumerism

Don’t shop today . . . or tomorrow . . .  or even this weekend. School clothes shopping sprees can wait until next weekend. Take the money you would normally spend and send it to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

From displaced relatives and friends to higher gas and food prices, this disaster effects us all, regardless of your geographic location. New Orleans is completely ruined, the first time a major city in the United States has been completely destroyed since the Civil War. Millions don’t have power, food, or even water. Give as much to help your neighbors as you do to the folks at Target. Send an email to the folks at Wal-Mart to encourage them to give back some of the dollars, or better yet give food and water to the people who helped them become the largest retailer in the world

Here is a list of relief organizations accepting donations for the efforts:

Red Cross: 1-800-HELP-NOW or

Episcopal Relief & Development: 1-800-334-7626 or

United Methodist Committee on Relief: 1-800-554-8583 or

Salvation Army:
1-800-SAL-ARMY or

Catholic Charities:
1-800-919-9338

The one the most comes to mind is the frequent sample sales held at a boutique called Luxe (http://www.luxeatlanta.com/). I heard they have awesome, NYC like sample sales.

The web can be a great place to find deals on your favorite beauty products. Unlike a make-up counter, you can shop and explore sites without the added pressure to buy an item. Popular beauty companies like Prescriptives and Lancome have web sites that offer free or reduced-cost shipping and free sample products for customers. Here are some of my friend Dee and my favorite beauty sites:

You can achieve star quality style without breaking the bank. The key to looking like a celebrity isn’t found in a bunch of designer labels, but in how you wear an item. Here are four tips that celebrities (or rather, their stylists) use to create their star looks.

Accessories to the Hilt
The key to dressing like a star is to go one step further than you would normally go in the accessory department. For example, if you normally wear one pin or brooch, wear two or three. If you wear only two-inch heels, one day kick it up to a pair of three-inchers. … read more
