A little more free-spirited than the Globes, Emmys, or Oscars, the Grammy’s red carpet can be a wildcard for fashion, which isn’t always a good thing. While we respect risk takers and their creative spirit, sometimes the combination just doesn’t end in a fashion win.

The Worst Fashion of the 2012 Grammy Awards

Rapper MC Lyte misses the mark in this avant garde take on a trashbag. The matte and shiny segments, and matching banded cuff look as if the ensemble was pieced together with duct tape, creating unflattering rouching across the midsection of her killer body.

It’s not that Katy Perry’s Elie Saab gown is terrible at all, it’s just terribly wrong for her. Besides being matronly, mutetd and a mis-matched shade of blue from her ‘do, she comes off looking like the Queen from Candyland.

We love Versace as much as the next girl, but can someone tell Nicki Minaj that the Lady Gaga thing has been done? The hooded scarlette cape nearly drowns the artist.

If Fergie’s tangerine Jean Paul Gaultier gown was the “safe” choice, we’d hate to see what the risky one could have been. The black undergarments ruin any chance the dress had, and a simple nude slip could have easily swapped this a bottom to a top pick.

Besides looking a tad too under dressed for the affair, LaurieAnn Gibson’s top and bottom half look as though they belong to two separate outfits. The funky boot would have been great with something a little more sleek or form fitting on top.

Let’s face it, the washed out lace styling of Skylar Gray is just not a Grammy’s look. Her lips are lost in a sea of white, and the dress would have been better in, literally, any other color to give her some depth.

We’re not sure if it’s the flat sole, the height of the boot, or the length of the dress, but the look on Linda Chorney just doesn’t sing to us. It doesn’t feel age-appropriate (or maybe even era-appropriate) and a simple pump or cover-up could have done wonders.

Robyn’s white satin “mullet” dress is all sorts of wrong. A tapered hemline works best if you want to work the short in the front, long in the back look, and when paired with the platform shoes this one ends up a bit too short. The banded and gathered waist is unflattering across the torso, and the fluttering top half would have been best complimented with a full-length column style gown.

Nautical - Picking up on the sailor stripe which has been trending strong for the past few seasons, nautical inspired jewelry has been cropping up all over the place. Intricate knots, anchors, and beach motifs can be found on anything from rings to bracelets to earrings. What makes this jewelry trend incredibly fun is that it looks equally fab paired with the aforementioned sailor stripe top or dress, or as a stand alone piece, adding a hint of whimsy to a classic suit or skinny jeans and a T.

Mixed Metals - So, what did you used to be? A golden girl or a silver lover? There was a time when you had to pick one, but those days are over! This trend has been around for a little while, but has only really picked up momentum and gone mainstream this season. A big part of this has to do with last Spring/Summer’s jewelry star: rose gold. Now, many of the most fashionable and well-loved designers out there are mixing metals not only in their collections, but within their actual pieces too. So, as you finish getting ready, why not pile ‘em on and mix ‘em up? An arm clad with a gold watch, stacks of rose gold bangles with silver rings (or any combination thereof) is a great way to embrace this trend with gusto! Or, if you’re not one to wear a lot of jewelry, how about a pair of earrings with a mix of silver and gold danglers? So, let us repeat - if only for emphasis - Go ahead! Mix your metals!
